The best attribute of Syndrome/Violet - Commonly known as Synlet, and occasionaly Vidrome - is that without the constraints of being cannon (i.e. Tony/Vi or Syn/Mirage, where there was serious evidence in the movie that these pairings exist) Synlet has endless posibilites.
Description of Synlet
Most fanfictions are based around a basic plot. Syndrome did not die on the explosion - usually accredited to his zero-point energy - but is alive and well, and more bent on revenge than ever before, looking to take revenge on one of the most accesible/vulnerable members of the Incredibles family: Violet. This plot does differ from author to author. Sometimes Syndrome and Violet meet randomly... sometimes not so randomly, but whatever the circumstances, sarcasm and awkward situatins are bound to follow. Syndrome and Violet are/were social outcast.
They have many similarities, and the possiblity for romance is deffinately there!
Concerning Other Pairings
Before anything else is said, I want it to be known that Beautiful Disaster does not support bashing, flaming, or ship-wars or any kind, both incoming and especially outgoing - don't give Synlet fans a bad name guys!! So remember, its just fiction for heaven's sake, not that big of deal... why is that so hard to remember?? Ok... anyways, back on subeject!
Why not Tony/Vi?
In general, to most Synlet-shippers, Tony/Vi seems to be lacking in the plot and agnst department. On the other hand, Synlet has so, if not excessive, amounts of both!! Also, many have observed that we really don't know what kind of person Tony is, and Violet only agreed to a single date, who knows how long that relationship will last?
Why not Syn/Mirage?
Also, in general - can you tell I have issues with generalizing, in general, lol, my attempt at a lame joke - seems, well, finished. To Syndrome, Mirage's dissent was the ultimate wound. It placed her on a similar, if not the same, level as Mr. Incredible, and we all know how much he likes Mr. Incredible. Plus, did anyone beside me think it seemed like Mirage was hitting on Bob?
Defense of Synlet
The best defense of Synlet was given by auri mynonys in one of the forums over at Fanfiction.net,
and she has given me permission to use it on this site! Thanks, auri!!
"Here's what I think about Syn/Vi. Villain/hero relationships (although they may be unrealistic) tend to be more complex and interesting because of the moral struggles involved on both the characters' parts. That attracts some people to pairing these types of characters together. Of course, not all of these stories are well done (I'll even point out my own Syn/Vi for abuse), but some of them make the pairing really WORK. It's not an easy task, but the authors that can do it usually turn out excellent fics.
As for Syndrome being the villain obsessed with her father, that's part of the complexity of the pairing. How can you get these two characters together when so much stands between them? It's sort of following the thread of "love prevails over all things."
Violet also almost seems to lend herself towards speculation on whether or not she could end up becoming a fallen hero. She's depressed about being Super at the beginning of the movie; authors can take that thread and develop it. She's fairly lonely - when do you see Violet with any friends from her school? Never. She hides behind her hair and her mask. Granted, all of that changes at the end of the movie, but it's a lot harder to leave your past behind than it seems, as anyone knows. Authors of this pairing can develop Violet's more angsty side in order to make everything click.
Syndrome falling in love with Violet is a little harder to pull off, but here are several motivations he could have for ending up with Violet:
1) She's a super. Syndrome may be angry at the Supers (particularly Mr. Incredible) for rejecting him, but he still wants to become one, and he still obviously admires them. He's envious of their talents and their lives. I think he'd never be able to date just a normal woman, unless she literally treated him like he was her superhero all the time. He'd want someone with superpowers, if only to be able to feel like he was finally worthy of at least one super's attention.
2) She's Mr. Incredible's daughter. What more perfect revenge on an old enemy than to steal his only daughter away from him? This doesn't justify any sort of love for her, but it could still be motivation, whether subconscious or directly intended.
3) If, say, Syndrome were to kidnap Violet to begin his revenge again, I think they'd start off by exchanging sarcastic insults. Doesn't sound romantic, but they both have a similar sense of humor. Look at the comments they make. They both have a habit of making sharp, sardonic retorts. Eventually they'd start to notice other similar qualities between the pair of them. Develop from there.
4) Going back to Violet's semi-angstiness, an author can take Violet and have her starting to become more sympathetic to the villains she fights. She knows what it's like to be super, and for most of her life she's hated it - it's likely that she wouldn't really blame Syndrome for hating the supers.
This entire time I've been thinking of an excellent Vidrome, but I'm ashamed to say I can't remember the title. When I do, I'll post it here again. It's the best example of the pairing that I've seen, and I think it gives the most justification to them.
That's my thoughts on this."
