JETPLANE LANDING + SOLANOID + AMPLIFIER.
AT YORK FIBBERS.  03/ 11/ 03.

Amplifier have received rave reviews from all areas of the media. Until now that is. I personally don’t see what all the hype is about. I got well bored during their set. All their songs seemed to mingle into each other to form one long ‘song’. If you can call it a song. It was more like a variety of noises that were all mixed in together and that went on for 30 minutes. There were vocals, you just couldn’t hear them very well through the samples, feedback and so called ‘music’.
They seem to be another of these bands that have signed a big record deal and have shit loads of cash to waste on pointless things that aren’t needed. The video for their debut single was shot in Canada. Was there really any need for that? I think not. And was there really any need for the amount of equipment they had? They had so much equipment that it covered like half of the venues floor space. These guys are going to be massive apparently. But not because they’re any good, just because the have lots of cash behind them which can buy them high profile support slots and lots of promotion that other better bands simply can’t afford. Don’t believe the hype. You’ll only end up feeling cheated and disappointed.
Solanoid's debut album, 'Aurora Avenue', was released in September. It was followed up with the single 'University'. Said single was one of the big highlights of their set.
The band are made up of Lee Pecqueur (vocals / guitar), Jon Crawford (bass) and Adam Savage (drums) and fecking rule. I was very impressed with their catchy guitar pop rock. The band had great stage presence and were clearly enjoying themselves, unlike Amplifier who looked like they would much rather be at home watching Eastenders or something. I like Eastenders but Solanoid were more than worth missing it for. Maybe they can use this quote on a future press release… ‘Solanoid… worth missing Eastenders for’. What do you think? Nice huh?
So yeah, Jetplane Landing. They are a band. A really rather good band in fact. They sing songs and play instruments. I hadn’t seen them in over a year until this gig. In that time I forgot just how good these guys are live. They now seem to have a really big following. Lots of people in the crowd shouted out requests for songs they wanted playing and lots of people were singing along to tracks throughout the near hour long set.
After opening with ‘Acrimony’, they played ‘Effect A Change’ and latest single ‘Calculate The Risk’, both of which are taken from their 2nd studio album, ‘Once Like A Spark’.
The band mixed the new material in with the old. The classic ‘Summer Ends’ featured after ‘Fundamental Law’. The four piece seemed to be having a great time on stage. Andrew said that ‘Nights like this is what been in a band is all about’. He later went on to say that ‘Having you guys sing our songs back at us is amazing and makes it all worthwhile’. Jetplane Landing are a band that do genuinely appreciate the support fans show them. I think they were shocked so many people had turned out to see them.
They concluded their set with the amazing ‘What The Argument Has Changed’ before returning to the stage for a one song encore in the form of ‘The Boy You’. It was a great set. Can’t wait to see them on their next tour in the spring.
