Focus On Our Liturgy
TODAY’S LITURGY
is for the Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time. We need to live our faith twenty-four hours a day. We live in a time when it seems alright to bend the rules and compromise values to get ahead or to be held in high regard. This is contrary to the fact that we have been given everything by our living God in order to share and do good works. We are to be honest and trustworthy in accumulating wealth that is measured not by what we have, but by what we share.FIRST READING (Amos 8:4-7) - Amos criticizes those who take advantage of the less fortunate. All people are God’s children. The deeds of the wicked will not be forgotten by the Lord.
SECOND READING (1 Timothy 2:1-8) - Paul writes that those who wish to follow Christ Jesus should devote their lives to prayer and peace. We are encouraged to pray for everyone. Such prayer is pleasing to God who wills the salvation of all.
GOSPEL (Luke 16:1-31) - As disciples of Jesus, we cannot serve two masters. Jesus relates the parable of the unjust steward. He teaches His disciples to use possessions wisely.
(From Celebration, Mount Morris, IL; St. Anthony Press, Cincinnati, OH; Commentaries, Diocese of Lansing, MI)
Next week’s readings: Amos 6:1,4-7; 1 Timothy 6:11-16; Luke 16:19-31.

PARISH SOCIAL MINISTRY
PRAYER FOR A NEW SOCIETY
All nourishing God, your children cry for help against the violence of our world:
Where children starve for bread and feed on weapons;
Starve for vision and feed on drugs;
Starve for love and feed on videos;
Starve for peace and die murdered in our streets.
Creator God, timeless preserver of resources,
Forgive us for the gifts that we have wasted.
Renew for us what seems beyond redemption;
Call order and beauty to emerge again from chaos.
Convert our destructive power into creative service;
Help us to heal the woundedness of our world.
Liberating God, release us from the demons of violence.
Free us today from the disguised demon of deterrence that puts guns by our pillows and missiles in our skies.
Free us from all demons that blind and blunt our spirits;
Cleanse us from all justifications for violence and war;
Open our narrowed hearts to the suffering and the poor.
Abiding God, loving renewer of the human spirit,
Unfold our violent fists into peaceful hands:
Stretch our sense of family to include our neighbors;
Stretch our sense of neighbor to include our enemies until our response to you finally respects and embraces all creation as precious sacraments of your presence.
Hear the prayers of all your children. Amen.
Pax Christi, USA
This Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium, Parish Social Ministry will be showing the film Pay It Forward(PG-13). Please join us for an evening of good company, good entertainment and free refreshments. You’ll be glad you did!!

Seminars will be offered in our parish, beginning on Friday, October 5, in Carew Hall, starting at 7pm. These will continue through November 16. These seminars are open to all seeking to deepen their spirituality through reflection on the Holy Spirit’s presence to us through God’s Love; Salvation; New Life; Receiving God’s Gift; Praying for Baptism in the Holy Spirit; and Growth and Transformation in Christ. You will be invited to register after the Masses this Saturday and Sunday.RESPECT LIFE
The October issue of LIFE NEWS is now being mailed out to the thousands of people who subscribe to it. If you would like to have a copy mailed to you each month, please call 631-243-1435 and leave your name and address.
There are some complimentary copies available and they can be found in the Book Rack in the Church lobby.
In order to celebrate the great gift of life, we are planning a “baby shower” on October 7, Respect Life Sunday. That weekend, there will be a bassinet in the lobby of the Church. We ask that you bring unwrapped new items of baby clothes, diapers, layette items, Pampers, etc., and put them inside the bassinet. All items will then be taken over to our Parish Outreach where they will be given to needy mothers and their babies.
“Whatever you do for one of the least of my sisters and brothers, you did it for me.” Matthew 25.
Also happening on Respect Life Sunday:
UNITY SUNDAY—hosted by the Catholic Daughters and the Right to Life community in Carew Hall. Come and have a donut and a cup of coffee and talk to someone you have not yet met and make him/her a friend!
STAND UP FOR LIFE—After the 12:30pm Mass, there will be a bus outside the Church to take all those who wish to Stand Up For Life at the intersection of Route 110 and Route 25 in Huntington. This will be a peaceful, prayerful presence, affirming our faith and the belief that every baby deserves to be born. The bus is donated by St. Regis Knights of Columbus and all are encouraged and welcome to come. The thousands of people there will silently stand with placards that say: “Love Them Both” (picture of mother and child). Time will be from 2pm to 3:30pm.
If you intend to drive yourself, use the LIE exit for Route 110 North up to the Walt Whitman Mall.
RAINBOWS FOR
ALL GOD’S CHILDREN
Registration for “Rainbows” is now in progress for our Fall semester. “Rainbows” is a program for children whose lives have been disrupted by divorce or separation of their parents, or the death of a loved one.
Children grieve as much as adults, but because of their age, they are silent mourners and have a much harder time expressing their hurt feelings.
“Rainbows” provides the guidance and nurturing of trained caring adult facilitators, peer support and a secure place to grieve so healing and acceptance may take place.
Sessions will be held in the evenings from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm, starting later this month. To register, call Mary Dougherty, “Rainbows” coordinator at 631-588-5517 or leave a message at the Church Office.

Fostering Stewardship
as a way of life
Reflection: The dishonest manager in today’s parable knew how to manipulate money to his own advantage. But the Gospel warns that no one can serve both God and money. Which do I serve? Is my stewardship such that anyone can tell?
