Bardic Challenges:

A Boasting Challenge!

When Beowulf arrives at Heorot hall, they throw a great feast in his honor, but not everyone is impressed. Unferth had heard that Brecca had beaten Beowulf in a swimming contest in his youth. Beowulf counters with his tale of being tossed in the storm, swimming wearing his trusty gold plate chain mail and carrying his great sword, which he uses to kill no less than 9 sea monsters on the bottom of the ocean. He then finds himself in Finland (way off course) and has to swim home.

Unferth is then impressed.

Your job is to impress Unferth. Come up with your own challenge that you lost, but proves you are the better person anyway. This challenge will be held during the first remove of the feast. You do not need to eat feast, just be present.

Beowulf: In five minutes or less!

You job is to tell the story of Beowulf, in its entirety, in five minutes or less. You may choose any medium you wish. Mime, sock puppets, musical interludes, play fighting or other odder forms are encouraged. You may work as a team.

Questing!

You have chosen to seek you fame and fortune here on this day. Here¹s how it works!

Throughout the day you will have many opportunities to add to your glory. Each of the following activities is worth one point.

Volunteering - 1 point for each hour
Class participation - 1 point for each class attended
Teaching a class - 2 points
Playing in the Hnefatafl tournament - 1 point
Making it to the semifinals - 1 point
Fighting in the melee practice - 1 point
Heaving the Arm - 1 point
Cheating the Dragon - 1 point
Playing Polo - 1 point

Other token opportunities may present themselves throughout the day. Tokens may be begged, borrowed or otherwise obtained in a heroic manner. Tokens must be counted at Troll prior to the lecture. The three Heroes with the most tokens will face off in the most glorious of challenges, Viking Jeopardy.

*******

Hnefatafl Tournament

The tournament will be a randomly drawn, single elimination tree. Please sign up at troll or attend the basic hnefatafl class to participate. The tournament will begin at 10 am and take place in the lower gym.

*******

Improbabable Viking Long Boat Polo!

Teams of 2 boats with 2-3 people each will play in the afternoon. Both a tournament and random play will occur given time. Sign up for a boat in the tournament at troll or on the field. The boats are: The Golden Griffins, The Green Dragons, The Red Gophers, and The Blue Squirrels.

********

The monster has been defeated, so let's celebrate! How accurately can you heave Grendel's arm?
