| Mk1 History |
| The Vauxhall Astra was introduced to the Uk in early 1980. Being offered in 5-door Hatchback or Estate form and 3-door form. In 1982 the 1598 cc ohc was introduced. Later the same year automatic transmission became an option on certain models. A diesel powered version was launched and the saloon body style was discontinued. In 1983 a 5-speed box appeared first on the SR hatchback, later to become available in a wider range of models. The ultimate peformance derivative - the GTE hatchback.
