It is, without a doubt, the most frequently-asked question on the Underground Howard Stern Message Board. In a word, the answer to the question is “nowhere.” None of the affiliate stations carrying the Show are allowed to broadcast it over the Internet. If you call any station carrying the Stern Show and ask why they don’t webcast it, they’ll probably say, “We wish we could but we’re not allowed because it’s forbidden in our contract with Howard.” They like to make Howard look like the bad guy but in fact it is the stations themselves that insist on this contract provision to protect their exclusive market rights.
Each station and its advertisers want to be sure that if you are listening to the Show in their market, you are hearing it on THEIR station, with THEIR commercials. In fairness to the stations, they just want to avoid this scenario:
ADVERTISER: I would like to buy advertising time on your station. How
much do you charge for a one-minute spot on the Howard Stern Show?
STATION: Well, our advertising rates are based on the ratings.
In this market, Howard has about 250,000 daily listeners.
ADVERTISER: And how many of those 250,000 hear the Show from
stations over the Internet instead of listening to it on your station?
STATION: To tell you the truth, we don’t really know for sure.
ADVERTISER: Then how do you know how much to charge?
STATION: Um…that’s a good question.
So basically it’s just a simple business decision. By sticking together and agreeing that none of them will webcast, the stations assure themselves of being the exclusive sources for the Howard Stern Show in their respective markets. Unfortunately the people who get screwed are those who do not live in a Stern market and have no access to the Show.
