Production Notes:(Taken from official site)
While revising the screenplay, Figgis began to think of his friend Stephen Dorff in the role of Dale Massie-a man who returns to Cold Creek Manor looking for work, as well as to reclaim his family heritage. "When I thought of him for Dale Massie, I thought that he's just at the right point in his career to play this type of character," says Figgis. Like Quaid and Stone, Dorff was quick to commit to the project.
Scarred by his abusive relationship with his father, on the surface Dale is charming, helpful, and popular with his neighbors. But Dale is also prone to sudden bursts of anger, capable of lashing out against his closest friends and family.
Dorff was "blown away" by the character. "Dale is so rich with emotion and textured with layers of schizophrenia and confusion. It's a real showy part. What I found the most interesting was that you feel sorry for him."
Stone has nothing but praise for her co-star's performance. "The Dale character, who is played by Stephen, takes off with the movie," says Stone. "He is very powerful in the role."
"I had the most wonderful fun playing this evil old curmudgeon and working with Dennis Quaid and Stephen Dorff, two actors I admire tremendously," says Plummer. "It was two days of extreme pleasure, particularly as it afforded me the chance of working with the wonderfully talented director Mike Figgis, whose keen sense of edge and sardonic wit kept morale flying high."
Dorff welcomed the chance to play opposite Plummer. "He's one of my favorite actors," says Dorff. "It was only a day, but it was such a treat to work with him."
According to Dorff, Figgis is "an incredibly artistic director" who gained his trust by giving him the opportunity to "be free and play."
The nights spent shooting on the roof and around the devil's throat in the blinding rain were not a pleasant experience for anyone. Dorff freely admits the rain sequence was the most difficult portion of the shoot. "The hardest part of this film was the fight sequence on the roof. It looks spectacular, but it was cold, rainy and messy up there."
