FIELD MUSEUM PHOTOS

BRIAN COOLEY ART

LOCATION: Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, Illinois
DATE OF VISIT: May 2000

These models of Sue's skull were both created by dinosaur sculptor Brian Cooley. Cooley has worked on not only Sue, but other dinosaurs, including Paul Sereno's recently discovered sauropod Jobaria. The first model shown is a one half sized fleshed out model of Sue's skull. This model was unveiled at the Field in 1999 to accompany their new exhibit "Sue, the Inside Story," based on the 1998 CT scanning of her skull. This CT scanning revealed new insights into the senses of the living Tyrannosaurus rex, and proved to science that the tyrannosaurid olfactory (smell) bulbs were enormous, and that the sense of smell was very important to T. rex.

The second model is a half sized version of the skeletal structure of Sue's skull, and is actually not an exhibit at the Field Museum. Instead, this model is displayed outside of the Field Museum's Sue Store, where two of these models are being sold for $34,000 each! Cooley created these earlier this year, and will share all profits with the Field Museum.
