REVIEWS:

STAZJA weaves a wonderment of words into flights of fancy with invigorating toe-dips into reality. You (as the reader) walk through her life with sentiments of family and observation. Her eye has been honed by her rich background and diversity of friendship and acquaintanceship. She is the kind of person who gets along with almost everyone. Her poetry moves from bed to battlefield with aplomb as she extricates her readers from their easy chairs and on to the front lines of life. Yes she is my friend. Yes she is one of the most loyal people I know. Yes she has incredible integrity and yes it shows in her poetry.

CONSTRUCTING a world for us of her own memory, Stazja McFadyen becomes not only our creator but our tour guide on a journey through her poems. This is a world of heart and conviction, of both righteous indignation and marigold petals, of "a vegetable's quiet patience" or anger at the injustice just outside the door. Garland is a braiding of the many facets of this poet, long recognized as being a dynamic force in the world of poetry. We glimpse mother, daughter, wife, lover, crusader, human being in all her complexities as she shares her strength and her vulnerabilities expressed so honestly in her work. Stazja is a relentless warrior with a nurturing soul. Let her light be an example to all who walk the journey of Garland as Stazja McFadyen leads the way.

Selected poems from Garland

When I Am New

When all this toxic sorrow
has been neutralized,
the bad blood leeched
from arteries and memories,

transfused with perfect hemoglobin,
equal portions sunshine,
rain forests,
sheet music written for clarinets,

I will be new,
with unfamiliar eyes
incapable of cataract vocabulary,
asking the embodiment of "you"

(who understands that tides
obey the moon,
and loves them as they are),
to see me now.
