| Most people who come to Boswinger these days stay either at the Seaview International Holiday Park or Boswinger Youth Hostel and spend some time on beautiful Hemmick Beach. Not far away is the picturesque Caerhays Castle. This was built by John Nash in 1808 for J.B.Trevanion the local land owner. However by 1840 John Trevanion was heavily in debt and fled to Paris where he died. Thirteen years later the derelict castle was bought by Michael Williams MP a prominent mineowner, the castle was restored and the gardens developed.. Around the turn of the century. J.C.Williams arranged plant gathering trips to China. Love them or hate them, it was at Caerhays Castle that the first rhododendron to arrive in Britain made its appearance in 1903. Caerhays is now the home of huge Asiatic magnolias and the x williams camellia hybrids. |
