Welcome to the first American website dedicated to the Stabyhoun breed. This website was built in 2001 for the betterment and promotion of the Dutch Stabyhoun in America.

The name:  Stabyhoun originates from Friesland, a northern province of the Netherlands. The official club for this breed is the Dutch Stabyhoun Club, LINK: (http://www.nvsw.nl/index.html) so most of us rely on the Dutch Club for guidance. The first part of the name is probably from the Dutch: sta me bij (stand by me). The last part is simply Friesian, meaning dog. It is pronounced "hoon" and together "sta BAY hoon".  The stabyhoun is a gundog of which descriptions were  found as early as 1800.  In earlier days it was used for small game and bird.  It turned out to be a fine polecat and mole catcher and also during the hunting season was used as an all-round gundog.  It was also used as a draught dog.  It is a fine pointer, an excellent tracker and a good watchdog.

If you are interested in more information about this breed, feel free to contact us. Since we do not breed any more, we can provide you with an unbiased opinion about the pros and cons of this breed.  There are limitations to acquiring one because there are only a few breeding pairs available in the USA.  Many people find it faster traveling to the Netherlands to get one, just like we did in 2001.   Most puppies will be around 9 pounds at eight weeks and it is best to be brought back as carry-on.  If you are interested in a Stabyhoun from the USA, be sure the pup has good blood lines and check with OFA for any hip dysplasia problems. The link to OFA's Stabyhoun results page is on my links page.
