Spring Valley High School is located in Huntington, WV. It opened its doors in 1998, when three aging area high schools were consolidated.
The Spring Valley Band is comprised of approximaely 140 dedicated members who spend countless hours during the year at practices, football games, marching competitions, and concert festivals. The band program has won numerous awards and honors since Spring Valley opened its doors. Aside from the marching band, the program also boasts three concert bands and a jazz band. The Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Concert Band (a.k.a Freshman Band) have consistently received superior ratings at concert festivals, and the Jazz Band has been dubbed one of the best jazz bands in the state of West Virginia, winning the honor of performing at the WV Music Educator's Convention in 2008.
The Colorguard program has only become a full-fledged Colorguard in the last three years. Before that, the program ran three separate groups which were the Majorette Line, Flag Corps, and the Feature Twirler. Each group performed separately of one another at marching competitions, with little to no coordination of drill, costumes, or choreography. After seious thought by the Band Directors, it was decided that the band program needed to take a new direction on the marching field. When this re-orginization occurred the Majorette Line, Flag Corps, and Feature Twirler were combined into the SVCG. While there is still a Majorette Line, Feature Twirler, Flag Corps, and now a Rifle Line, these groups only perform separately at Football Games and Parades. During the competition show, the groups perform as the SVCG utilizing flags, weapons, dance, and various props (if they are appropriate to the show).
In the last several years, the SVCG has performed with the marching band in approximately 17 competitions, winning numerous first place awards. It is one of the top colorguards in West Virginia and is by far the largest guard in the state.
