| What are Mental Skills? | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Emotional management and health are also necessary for excellence, and athletes are encourged to pursue balance and maintain perspective to help prevent overtraining and burnout. Psychological aspects of sport performance have not always been a component in developing exceptional athletes. Optimal performance has traditionally been achieved using training regimens that focus mainly on establishing physical strength. However, both athletes and coaches recognize the benefits of mental training on sport performance. Mental training is a sport psychology intervention used by athletes in conjunction with their physical training to help them achieve their desired outcomes. Mental training includes skills like imagery training, goal setting, relaxation techniques, positive self-talk and feedback. Enhanced performance, reduced anxiety, increased motivation and self-confidence are some of the many benefits that mental training offers. As part of our mission, Sport Psychology Ontario encourages the use and implementation of mental skills training by athletes and coaches. |

There are several skills and strategies that can be learned to enhance ones ability to control their activation level. Relaxation preparation also facilitates concentration and imagery practice becuase it can reduce or eliminate other thoughts. Methods such as breathing exercise, progressive muscle relaxation, meditation and vizualization can be uselful. |
Research has found that goal setting can facilitate performance. It helps to focus energy, motivates, and helps you to persist. Goal setting is one of the more tangible mental skills, however, it is not as simple as stating that you want to WIN! Goals should follow specific guidelines to assure that they promote positive changes in anxiety, confidence and motivation. |

| Confidence Building | ||||||||||||||||||||
| When most athletes describe a successful performance, confidence is usually a part of it. Confident athletes think about themselves and the action at hand in a different way than those who lack confidence. Building confidence within an athlete is something many athletes, coaches and parents struggle with. | ||||||||||||||||||||
