My Experience:
It took me quite a while to decide to get my piercing. I decided to pierce my tongue because, it is the fastest and less painful piercing, plus its not visible for everyone to see.
I live in Miami, FL, so I decided to go to Tattoos by Lou on US1. They are very good and clean. Make sure the place you go to cleans their things with an autoclave. An autoclave is a sterialization machine; that hospitals use to sterialize their things. Tattoos by Lou uses an autoclave. It cost me  $60 dollars to pierce it and get a barbell. It might be a little expensive compared to other places, but I know that I went to a good and clean place. Also, make sure that your piercer has a Hepetitus B vaccine. Remember DO NOT be AFRAID to ask any questions, I mean, it is your body they are piercing. I have included a good link of piercing aftercare and the link for Tattoos' by Lou.
First the piercer checks your tongue, to see if your tongue is able to be pierced. Then you sit down in a dental looking chair. There your piercer; asks you to rinse for about 30 secs to 1 min. with a mouthwash. Then he clamps your tongue, marks the spot on your tongue, and pierces it. The whole process is fairly quick. The pain is very minimal. Biting your tongue hurts way more than getting it pierced. A normal piercing is about 2-3 cm from the tip of the tongue but remember this always depends on the length of your tongue. The first barbell they put in is about 1 inch long, this is because your tongue will probably swell and you need space. You can go change it after your swelling goes down to a smaller size, usually 5/8 or 3/4 of an inch. You could also downsize it to 1/2 an inch.
About Getting Pierced:
Making a Decision:
I pierced it on March 5, 2001. I was pierced with a 14 gauge barbell that was about 1 inch long. 14 gauge is usually standard. I was very lucky because, my tongue did not swell, I did not have pain, and I did not bleed. Some people's tongue might swell up for the first days. Some people might have minimal bleeding, but remember you have less complications if your piercer is a professional. Some people experience pain and you should take non-asprin medication, such as:  Tylenol.
Aftercare:
Full healing takes up to 6 to 8 weeks. But your most critical time is the first two weeks. Your gonna have a normal discharge from your piercing, it will be a yellowish whitish color, this is normal. It is a mixture of lymph and body fluids that are part of the healing process. DO NOT apply ointments, hydrogen peroxide and other things to your tongue. You can use Tech 1000 to rinse your mouth or Listerine but remember to dilute the listerine with water (50-50) because of its high alcohol contenet. Also buy Gly-Oxide and sea salt.
Instructions for Aftercare:
When you first get your piercing:
1. Rinse your mouth using Tech 1000 or diluted Listerine every two or three hours. Both of these are used to disinfect your mouth and piercing.
2. Also, use Gly-Oxide directly on the piercing (both sides) several times a day. The Gly-Oxide will bubble and bring up any debris or discharge that may be inside your piercing.
3. Also, instead of using Tech 1000 or diluted Listerine you can use sea salt with water. Approximately 1/4 tsp to every 8 ounces of water. The sea salt helps with the healing process.
4. It is normal if you get a white surface on your tongue or bad breath this is probably because you have been using diluted Listerine and the high alcohol level drys out your tongue.
5. When you start eating you can brush your teeth and your tongue, you should also brush your jewerly so plaque won't form on it.
6. After that just rinse or brush your teeth after everything you eat or put in your mouth (including cigarettes, fingers, hair, etc.).

EAT LOTS OF ICE
AS SOON AS YOU GET YOUR PIERCING. I ATE ICE FOR FOUR HOURS RIGHT AFTER I GOT MY PIERCING AND MY TONGUE DID NOT SWELL UP. SO EAT LOTS OF ICE THROUGHOUT THE FIRST WEEK.

What to eat:
For the first few days your tongue will be sore and might be swollen so you can only eat cold things. Such as ice, popsicles, jello, cold pudding, slushies, anything cold. If you can chew let your food cool down. DO NOT EAT HOT FOOD. Let it cool down first. I believe hot food causes your blood vessels to expand or let more blood flow through, but don't quote me on this. DO NOT eat spicy food either. Just think COLD food and drink plenty of water. Also Vitamin C and Zinc supplements help in healing faster. I took 2000 mg of ascorbic Vitamin C and a multivitamin complex as my tongue healed.
After Healing:
After healing has tooken place then you can relax and enjoy your new tongue ring. All you need to do is just tighten your barbell to make sure it is not loose, so you won't end up swallowing it. Oh, and brush your barbell when you brush your teeth. Thats about it. Hope you found my website to be useful. Personally, I love my tongue ring. I use a 1/2 inch, 14 gauge barbell. Also, please refrain from any sexual activity while you are healing.
Hello Everyone. I have received many e-mails concerning what to wear in order to hide your tongue piercing. Well you could buy a TONGUE RETAINER, I personally have one and it hides the piercing as your speak and stuff, bc the barbell is clear so people won't see the shiny metal from the regular barbells as you speak. ;-)
I have included a new website: Tribalectic: in which: you can find tons of other info. on tongue piercing and any other piercing, they also sell good body jewerly. Well GOOD LUCK everyone.
