“WHO IS “SOMPECH WANCHIT”? Although many of you have not heard of the name “Sompech Wanchit”, you might have seen many of his paintings in top selling magazines such as Dee-Chan or Ploy-Karn-Petch. Or you might have seen his works being displayed at the River City Shopping Complex, Silom Galleria, Amarin Plaza, and All Season Place or at the Jamjuree Gallery. Sompech, also known as “Teddy” to many foreigners, is famous for his colorful and meaningful paintings. Colorful because he expresses himself through a bright, basic palette. Meaningful because of the story which can be read from each of his works. Teddy is always willing to explain his work to the viewer, and will encourage you to light a candle and put it in front of his work to get a different perspective of his work. “The moving flame will create a romantic feeling to the painting.” “It is not that hard to paint a rose to look like a rose, but it is hard to paint a rose which will give you a happiness, love, or sadness when you look at it, and that is my work,” Teddy explains as he smiles.
I was looking at a painting, above, titled, “Stand by Me”. Sompech told me that the hand of the mother on the daughter’s head is the way to express the mother’s love for the daughter. The way the head of the daughter leaned toward the mother also showed the love of the daughter to the mother. Both of them were waiting for the return of the father. The father is standing straight tall under the sun. The differing tones of the colors enhance the symbolic aspect. Sompech is a Bangkok native. He received his degree in Fine Art from Chulalongkorn University. For many of you who might want to see the work of this talented artist. Sompech will exhibit his work at the Rotunda gallery, Neilson Hays Library on Suriwongse road, this coming October. You can also send him an email at sompechw@yahoo.com or visit his studio near the Grand China Princess hotel. Writer: Chavalit Likitratcharoen |
