Barney Kessels Statement on the Guitar Playing of Johnny Smith:
"As far as Im concerned, no one in the world plays the guitar better than he. They might play it differently, but nobody plays better." - Barney Kessel
In the late 40s, the 50s and on into the late 60s, Johnny Smith made many Jazz Guitar Recordings. His Jazz Guitar set the pace for many Guitarists who were to come after him.
Johnny Smith will always be one of my greatest Guitar Heroes. He is one of the Greatest Musical Talents of our time. If you love Guitar, and would like to hear Johnny Smith at his best, seek out his LPs with Stan Getz and the Columbia LP he made with Art Van Damme the Jazz Accordionist. There is no finer guitar than what you will hear on those two LPs.

Johnny Smith is one of the greatest Guitar Players to ever live. The song "Moon Light in Vermont" by Johnny Smith on Guitar is now a legendary piece of music.
I met Johnny Smith in person in 1964 at his music store in Colorado Springs. He was a great guy, who had a really neat Guitar store. Johnny Smith talked at length with me. He posed for many pictures with me.

I went to see Johnny Smith in Person at Shanners, on 16th avenue in Denver; he often appeared at Shanners on Friday and Saturday Night when he was operating his music store in Colorado Springs. It was a wonderful experience to see Johnny Smith in person, playing his Genius Level Guitar. And it was Jazz, with his Quartet, at Shanners; Johnny Smith on Guitar, a Piano, Bass, and Drums. They really wailed. It was one of my big thrills in life to see Johnny Smith in person with his quartet.

Shanners was not a regular night club. There was no band stand, the Johnny Smith Quartet just set up in the corner, on the floor. The Music Johnny Smith played was near unbelievable. The Johnny Smith Quartet played many fast songs where the great technique of the genius guitarist shined. He was incredibly fast on the guitar, though his slow song "Moonlight in Vermont" had made him famous, and he did other slow songs that were equally great.
Before seeing Johnny Smith at Shanners, I had not heard him play the super fast Guitar that he played there. I had always thought of him as a mellow Guitar. In fact one of his albums was titled "The Mellow Guitar of Johnny Smith."
Joe Pass - Essential Jazz Lines -
Book and CD taught by
Corey Christianson contain a study of
lines used by Joe Pass, broken down and grouped according to how Joe used them
harmonically. The play-
along CD exemplifies how these relate to a harmonic background. Each harmonic section
contains a play-along
recording in the original key and a play-along, moving in fourths, to help the student
practice the lines in all
twelve keys. Eventually, the student will learn to mix and match these ideas and create
lines of their own. The
more phrases and ideas a student has, the more he/she is able to improvise or juxtapose
their ideas to create
new melodies on his/her
own..............................................................................................................................Price

I talked to Johnny Smith and the Band during their breaks. They were all nice to me and my wife. Though my wife was not really a Jazz Fan, she knew she was listening to Genius when Johnny Smith Played, and she enjoyed the music greatly.
All members of the Johnny Smith Quartet at Shanners were highly developed musicians who were worthy to play with this great guitarists. They clicked in a way that was pure music magic.
Johnny Smith was known for his clean and tasteful Guitar. His playing in person was very clean, no matter how fast his runs may have been. Naturally his slow playing, using very complex chords was always done with perfection. His tone quality was so good that one must hear him play to really know what a great tone he always got from his Guitar. The man was a perfectionists when it came to the Guitar and all music.
Johnny Smith held many seminars around the country after he moved to Colorado Springs and opened his Music Store. He was so highly thought of that the demand for his seminars were great. In reality Johnny Smith was a Guitar God by the time he moved to Colorado Springs. The World would not give him up. He was always in demand to appear here or there to give a seminar or a week end concert. However Johnny Smith still worked in his Guitar store like any other Guitar shop owner.
A Guitar Store owner that I taught Guitar for in St. Louis, Paul Huelsing, of Huelsing Music, told me that he went to see Johnny Smith there in his music store in Colorado Springs. There was Johnny Smith putting new strings on one of his customer's Guitar.
Musicians are known for the large Egos. However, Johnny Smith never appeared to be an egotistical person to me. When someone is as good on Guitar, and in music as Johnny Smith is, they don't have to be egotistical; they don't have to prove anything to anyone, including themselves. Johnny Smith was truly a self actualize person.

Carlton - Volume 1 (VHS)
When I met Johnny Smith in Colorado Springs at his Guitar Music Store, I had been a devoted fan since I was a very young Teenager. Both Johnny Smith and Barney Kessel had been two of my greatest Guitar Heroes. I was nervous when I met him. It was like being in the presence of greatness to me. Johnny Smith made me feel at ease. He was a great person to me.
I bought many Johnny Smith Albums. The ones I listened to the most were Johnny Smith with Stan Getz and Johnny Smith with Art Van Damme the Jazz Accordionist. Both albums were tops in my book. However, all of the Johnny Smith LPs were great. It's too bad that all his LPs were not put to CDs so people could purchase them now.
There can be no doubt that Johnny Smith is a musical genius. All one had to do was listen to him and you would immediately know you were in the presence of a Guitar Genius. His musical ability was so great that it cannot really be expressed in words. You must hear the man, and feel the Genius that is there in his music.
In a lifetime there are few musicians who are to the level that Johnny Smith is when it comes to music and playing the Guitar. I would name a few that I consider who are worthy to be mentioned with Johnny Smith: Johnny Smith, Barney Kessel, Tal Farlow and Wes Montgomery, and a Great Jazz Guitarist in St. Louis whos name is Bobby Ward. To me these were the top Be Bop Jazz Guitarists.
Of course Johnny Smith was much more than a Jazz Guitarist for Johnny Smith Played Trumpet in the Army Air Force Band, and he played trumpet regularly on many TV shows in New York City in the 50s. I never knowingly heard Johnny Smith Play Trumpet. I loved Guitar and only knew him for his Guitar Playing. However, Johnny Smith must have been an incredible trumpet Player to have played in the NBC Bands.
Be Bop Jazz is one of the most complex Music that exists. Johnny Smith was the greatest, playing Be Bop Jazz, both fast and slow songs. He has always been just plain great, pure genius, when it comes to guitar.
When Johnny Smith moved to Colorado Springs he had experienced the height of music success in New York City, in Jazz, Recordings, and the Radio TV Circuit. I heard that he moved to Colorado because of health reasons. When I met him he was rather pale looking. Johnny Smith was 42 when I first met him in 1964. However, he looked like a man about 30 years old. I remember Johnny Smith as being a young looking man. I shall always remember him in that way.

Johnny Smith was one of the Guitarists who designed a Guitar and had it built by a well known Guitar maker. The Great Guitarists is a perfectionist, that is why he worked with a Guitar Maker to get the Guitar he wanted. Johnny Smith also had his Amps Hand Built to his own specification. That is the length he went to get the sound in a Guitar that he wanted.
Gibson wanted to sell the Guitar he had designed, so Johnny Smith Commissioned Gibson to build and sell the Guitar. It is a very great honor to have a Guitar name for you. The Johnny Smith Gibson Guitar was designed by Johnny Smith and is now a collectors item. The Johnny Smith Guitar is very hard to find. No one wants to let go of a Johnny Smith Guitar.
The Great Guitarist is a must listen for those who love Guitar.
