Welcome to the Future
Based on a comic, X-men is about a future world where some humans, not all, have evolved into something else. To the rest of the world they are mutants, but to some they are the next step in mankinds evolution. They have various abilities and powers, but because of their differences and the dangers of their strength - many have gone into hiding because the general population fears them. Many develop their abilities upon puberty when their hormones are a raging and the next thing you know their kissin' guys and putting them into comas. As is the case with Rogue, she is a teen runaway who recently mutated into a person that is unable to have physical contact without draining the life source from the other individual. While on the road she meets up with Wolverine, who reluctantly gives her a ride, but she feels akin to him as he is also a mutant with some wickedly sharp nails.
The two of them are attacked by another mutant and then rescued by a team of superhero-like characters made up of Cyclops (who can fry bacon with his eyes), Storm (who can summon a blizzard) and Dr. Jean Grey who seems more normal than the rest but she has telepathy. They all live together in a sort of commune that takes in and educates young mutant children, in an environment where they see others who are more like them. Meanwhile the world is stirring with politicians like Senetor Kelly who is determined that something be done before they turn on mankind. Leading this group is Xavier, the wheelchair bound genius who also has telepathy and an old rival that becomes the focus of the story.

I'll scratch your back, you scratch mine.
Wolverine is the rebel of the group, who has a mysterious past that he cannot remember. He has regenerative abilities but also was part of some kind of experiment where indestructable metal was placed in his body frame to make him into a killing machine. Xavier's rival, who was one his friend, Magneto - is up to something really big. His intentions are tained by a troubled past. He is after one of them and they team together to fight off him and all his evil co-horts.
X-Men isn't one of those great movies, but it's a fun rental. It has a unique set of heroes and villians vs. the usual comicbook types we see on screen. A sexy blue fishlike woman who can morph into anybody, a powerful genius who can manipulate any metal substance with his mind, sure the idea is pretty neat. Mostly because it's explanable through a freak occurance in nature to the extreme. (vs. some of those cooky ones where they obtain their powers after being exposed to toxic waste or nuclear clouds). There is an X-Men 2 coming out with most of the same cast returning. There's a love interest between Wolverine and the doc, tho at times Rogue seems like she looks to him a little more than just a friend and protector. Some of the dialogue is a little cheesy, honestly I could do without Berry being cast in it. But overall it's just a fun form of escapism.
