DEDICATION OF THE SAN LORENZO HIGH SCHOOL VETERANS MEMORIAL
On May 31, 2001 the permanent San Lorenzo High School Veterans Memorial was dedicated on campus. The memorial is in a display case in the main lobby of the high school. The memorial includes photographs of the veterans (where we have them) and the original plaque presented to the school at the end of the first year of the program. In addition, a section of the memorial is set aside for honoring one of the veterans individually. This section is changed monthly, so that all our veterans will be honored in turn. This section will include photographs of the veteran (from both school and from his military career), a short biography, and a display of the medals the veteran was awarded while in the military.
Attending the dedication were school officials from the San Lorenzo Unified School District and the Eden Area ROP; relatives of the honored veterans; alumni of San Lorenzo; and representatives of the military, and federal, state, and local governments. The color guard was furnished by the Junior ROTC Corps of Cadets from Encinal HS in Alameda. They were real troopers - they were in their greens and the temperature was near 100 degrees.
The unveiling of the memorial was done by Mrs. Maxine Esposito, mother of Gary Giovannelli, and Joanne Norman, sister of Steve Srsen.
Since the unveiling two more veterans have been added to the memorial - Michael Welch and Jerry Henry. Both had left SLZHS prior to graduation. Their names were given to the Memorial Program team during the SLZHS 50th anniversary celebration.
We would like to thank U.S. Representative Pete Stark for helping us obtain the sets of medals. We would also like to thank Mr. Terry Clark for helping us in acquiring the display case.
Visitors may view the memorial whenever the school is open (usually 8am to 3pm, weekdays). Please stop by the main office for a visitors pass. The memorial is just across the lobby.
