Sligo European Radio say's goodbye.

Sligo European Radio completed its final broadcast on Sunday 7th October 2007, through the facilities of Jolly Roger Radio in Waterford, Ireland.

The emotionally charged final broadcast, which lasted 90 minutes, was replayed three times in succession by Jolly Roger Radio, effectively making our final broadcast last for four-and-a-half hours, not quite our longest continuous broadcast which was five hours, but near enough.

The final broadcast included farewell programmes lasting half-an-hour each by Stephen MacLeod, Jon Seabrook and station owner and presenter Chris Jensen.

You can listen to a studio quality recording of our final broadcast here:

Over the years Sligo European Radio has received reception reports from: Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Station owner and presenter Chris Jensen said "We've been broadcasting on and off for twenty years, relying largely upon other short-wave broadcasters to relay our programmes for most of that time, then in 2004 we bought our own transmitter which turned out to be our biggest mistake as we chose to broadcast on the 33-metre band, rendering our signals inaudible to our primary target audiences in Ireland and the UK".

As a result of this, the staff at Sligo European Radio simply were not getting very little listener correspondence and we all became very disillusioned with it all, so it was decided that it would be better to close the station down permanently on our 20th anniversary, and so we did, so if you missed our final broadcast on Sunday 7th October 2007, you now have the chance to listen or to download a studio recording of the full 90 minute final programme.

The studio has been fully dismantled and removed from the out-building on the lonely farmyard just outside Sligo Town, empty except for the occasional hen who decides to lay her eggs in there.

The antenna system has been dismantled and removed, in fact the only tell-tale sign that anything ever existed in the building is the worn carpet on the floor and the wooden frame of the studio console.
