Salt Lake Activity Group (SLAG)

Single Adults ages 30ish-50ish

About SLAG:

SLAG was originally formed in July of 2004 as a singles group (Juish Singles) working under the wings of the JCC (Jewish Community Center) here in Salt Lake City. Three complete (Tyler, Doug and Nissa) strangers who were all frustrated with the singles scene met during a meeting hosted by the JCC. The hopes were to revive the JCC’s almost defunct singles group. With a group brainstorming session, only 3 of us took to the task of bringing this nearly dead group back to life. We were a success for a short while until we out grew the denominational restrictions and membership limitations of the group.

In January 2005, Tyler took over the reigns of the (Juish group) and renamed it SLAG (Salt Lake Activity Group). At this point we left the JCC taking our members with us.  Now we were able to increase our membership base to include all of the religious and social diversity that exists here in Salt Lake City. We no longer were tied to; adhere to any religious affiliations or practices. We became 100% non-denominational. Doug took care of the promotional work, along with part of the activity planning. Nissa ended up leaving the group a few months later to pursue other things.

Our SLAG "Pizza Party" was started sometime 2005 as a way to bring people together. Every one loves pizza, right? The idea behind the pizza party was to purchase plain pizza’s and have members bring various toppings. This way we can build upon the pizza’s, creating colorful and tasteful creations. SLAG Pizza parties have become a smash hit amongst our group members, always attracting new people. Currently we attract between 35-50 people per party. Our emails are sent out to over 300 people and counting.

Midweek dinners were started around the Spring of 2005 and is nothing compared to the amount of people who participate today. Our current theme is ethnic restaurants, and a different place is visited once every 2 weeks.  This event is hosted by a couple of our dedicated members. Remember,  anyone can post an evening dinner anytime they so choose. Posting on SLAG is as easy as… just posting it!

It was hard work in the beginning and at times the founders felt like throwing in the towel. With lots of patience, SLAG’s membership started to grow, leading to larger participation amongst its members. Many lives have been touched by the bonds of friendship. Now we rely on you, our members to keep this group going by posting and organizing events.

Mission Statement

We are a diverse group of SINGLE adults ages 30ish-50ish (mostly transplants to the SLC area) who get together for outdoor (skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, walking, bike riding, outdoor concerts etc.) and various indoor activities (movies, parties, potlucks, theatre, concerts, midweek dinners, etc.). We are not a "DATING SERVICE." We DO NOT encourage married people to join.

We are single people looking for other single people with similar interests. Sometimes, singles get so hung up on the dating scene, that they forget the importance and fun of making friends for the sheer pleasure of having friends with common interests. Some of us have actually gone out on a one to one basis with a fellow member. While some of us date people inside and outside our group, we still enjoy participating in group activities.

We are non-denominational and are not influenced or affiliated with any religious groups or practices. We do serve alcohol at our parties. Our Group is like any other life force; it expands and contracts with each breath. As change happens, new dynamics are incorporated. The group that was formed 3+ years ago is not the same group we have today or what will be next year. You will meet new and different people with each event you go too.

MORE INFORMATION PLEASE --- Common questions answered

We have been getting emails lately from people asking me to send them more info, tell me more, and other questions of that nature. If you have a specific question or concern, please ask. Otherwise, the best way to "find out more" is to participate in one of our mid week dinners, come to a pizza party, or post and/or attend an event. Everyone is encouraged to post an event if they so choose. The more people who post, the more events we have.

The ratio of women to men has improved drastically. In the past we have had more women than men. The ratio of men to women is about equal at our parties and other events. Age ranges varies year to year, event to event. Low 40's to mid 50's age range seems to be popular now, along with an influx of some 30 something’s depending on the season.

Ongoing events include a mid week dinner that varies at different restaurant about every 2 weeks. Our Pizza Party's are about every 6-8 weeks. These are 2 great events that always attract Newbie’s and regulars. Events happen all the time, and if they don't, it's up to our members to make them happen.

We have no membership fees and we are strictly volunteer run. If the event cost money, you are only responsible for your share.
