History of the Sixteen Acres Civic Association

The purpose of the Sixteen Acres Civic Association is to serve in the best interest of the residents, as a liaison between the community of Sixteen Acres and the City government or other bodies. The Association will, through various committees, work with the community to implement projects and to maintain and improve the quality of life in Sixteen Acres.

The Association was started by a group of concerned residents in the early 1960's. At that time, it was known as the Sixteen Acres Civic Council. Their main goal, as it is now, was to preserve the quality of living that brought residents to this neighborhood. The council was not incorporated at that time, no dues were collected and everyone who resided in Sixteen Acres was considered a member. There was no formal structure to the Council and telephone committees were formed and implemented to inform the residents of important issues. Some of these issues included the library, zoning, roads and street lights, recreation and safety of the community.

In February of 1984 and in October of 1985, two organizations, namely the Bicentennial Committee and the Greenleaf Park Association made major monetary contributions to the Sixteen Acres Civic Association.

On April 24,1987, the Association became incorporated. The monthly meetings of the Association are on the third Tuesday of every month at the Church in the Acres on Wilbraham Road beginning at 7:00 p.m. Any person living in Sixteen Acres is eligible for membership into the Association.

Membership dues are $ 10.00 for the fiscal year (July 1st to June 30th) for a household with a maximum of two adults per household. Any person outside the boundaries of Sixteen Acres or a business within the boundaries of Sixteen Acres is eligible for a non-voting membership and the dues is $ 10.00 per fiscal year.

The officers of the Sixteen Acres Civic Association include president, vice president, assistant vice president, secretary and treasurer. There also a board of directors consisting of five to nine members. The five officers are included as directors. The officers and directors are elected by a majority vote of the membership at the meeting of the membership in June of each year.
