Levels of EMS Licensure:
Basic Life Support - "Minimum standard" as set forth by state law has been met. Provisions of EMS care is provided on a 24 hour, 365 days per year basis. Please refer to definition of EMT Basic.
EMT-Basic - an individual who has typically been trained for 114 hours or more under the Department of Transportation Standardized Curriculum and is licensed and/or certified by a state agency responsible for EMT licensure and certification.
Intermediate Life Support - Indicates that the license has EMT personnel and equipment at the Intermediate level of care. Please refer to EMT Intermediate.
EMT-Intermediate - An EMT who has specific training in advanced life support techniques such as advanced airway management and intravenous fluid access, but not the extent of the EMT paramedic; usually requires a direct physician order to perform advanced level techniques.
Paramedic Life Support - Indicates that the license has EMT personnel and equipment at the paramedic level of care. Please refer to EMT Paramedic.
EMT-Paramedic - An EMT who has received extensive training in advanced life support procedures and who usually can perform these skills under standing orders from a physician director.
Specialty Care - Indicates that the license has personnel and equipment for specific and special needs required for inter-facility transport of critical care patients. Need not operate on a 24-hour basis.
