| UNDERWATER HOCKEY Underwater hockey, a team sport played with sticks and a lead puck at the bottom of a swimming pool, is also known as the supreme anaerobic game due to the fact that players use snorkels to breathe on the water's surface before diving to join the action. Invented in the U.K. in the 1950s, it is now played in over thirty countries worldwide. SUHC The Stirling Underwater Hockey Club (SUHC) was established in 2004 with the purpose of introducing and developing this challenging sport in Singapore. With active members from at least a dozen countries: Australia, Belgium, Canada, China (Hong Kong), France, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland and the United States, SUHC is easily one of the world's most international underwater hockey clubs. SUHCers range in age from fourteen year-old teens to seniors in their fiftees, and the group consists of a relatively high proportion of female players (around one-out-of-three are women). In a mere four years, SUHC has played matches with its UWH neighbors Australia, Japan, New Zealand and the Philippines, topping things off by hosting the first Asian Underwater Hockey Championships here in Singapore. We invite all sports enthusiasts, fitness buffs, and those who simply love to play in the water to come join us for our twice-weekly games. Experienced players are on-hand to teach the basics to new players and anyone interested in trying out this exciting team sport. |
