This is a photo of a so-called Silver Lab that recently found its way to a Lab Rescue. AKC papers confirm that this dog is a registered Lab, but color lists it as a chocolate. How is this possible?

Please take the time to educate yourself before you buy any puppy. This page will give you more information on what questions to ask breeders and yourself:
How to find a reputable breeder--The "Puppy Checklist"

Also, remember that NO reputable breeder EVER breeds just to make money. Many factors in breeding quality Labradors to preserve the breed include, genetic testing, training, handling and entry fees to *prove* that their dogs are true Labradors. A reputable breeder's goal is improving the existing stock of Labrador Retrievers not making a profit. Reputable breeders do not produce litters for profit. View several pedigrees of the so-called Silver Lab. Please note that these dogs are highly inbred in order to maintain the production of the color. Inbreeding should only be done by the most experienced breeder who thoroughly knows their lines. Inbreeding concentrates the dogs' genes and can increase the chances of the puppies inheriting many genetic problems such as hip or elbow dysplasia, PRA (a blinding eye disorder in Labs), or epilepsy. Also note that some of the lines (further back--4th generation) have been used quite extensively by many reputable breeders and have NEVER produced the color. It is the relatively unknown lines in which the Weimaraner crosses may have occured introducing the dilute gene into this kennel's bloodlines. Click here
