A Paradise for Endangered Species

Corfu, Greece

Silva is a non-profit society which was founded for the breeding and protection of rare animals and for the propagation of various plant species which are in danger of extinction.

Silva is located in Corfu, Greece and covers an area of 100 stremmata, (approximately 25 acres).

Our property is covered with dense and rare vegetation including a 1,300 year old Ficos tree and a Citrodoro Eucalyptus tree which is approximately 1,000 years old !

Amongst our many flowers is the " Belladonna " which covers the grounds and is totally breath taking when in bloom.

The breeding and protection of the Skyrian Horse is one of our special endeavors at Silva. It is said that the soldiers of Alexander the Great rode these horses in their campaign to conquer the world. We are developing a "new role" for this small but clever and obedient horse, as it is ideal for young children to ride.

We have already initiated a program where children from the island's primary schools come on a regular basis and are in contact with our horses.

Another activity at Silva is the production of honey. We produce a very high quality of honey and we are proud to say that children with special needs have helped us to paint the hives.

Creating jobs for these children gave them a sense of responsibility and at the same time was a new and wonderful experience for them.

Part of the " Silva Project " is the provision of a shelter for a wide range of rescued animals such as owls and other birds, sheep, donkeys, etc.

We also maintain an aviary with small birds, ducks, pheasants, etc. in which young children are given the opportunity to come and visit.
