Goldfish Quick Profile

Description: Goldfish come in two distinct subsections, Koi and
Goldfish. There are many different types of both Koi and Goldfish. The types
are described in my Guide to the Goldfish
Species: Carassius
Auratus
Origin: Coldwater
streams in China
Temperature: 60-70 for common
and koi, 65-74 for fancy. Can survive through frost and 100 degree weather for
short periods of time.
pH-Neutral dH- Hard
Feeding: Goldfish flakes
are readily available. Pellets are better, however, as they have a higher
consumption rate (easier for the fish to find) and are less likely to decay and
fowl the tank. Look for food specifically for your type. (Fancy, common, koi)
Breeding: Has a
temperature trigger. See Guide to the Goldfish
Temperament: One of the most
peaceful fish in the hobby. They will beg for food and chase tank mates away
from it. May eat very small tank mates when very large, but most fast fish can
keep well away.
Adult Size:
Common: Slightly over a foot (14 inches) Fancy: up
to 10" Koi: over 2'
Lifespan: Over 20 is
quite common in well-cared for specimens. Minimum tank size: 10 gallons
for fancy, 15 for common, 100+ for koi (ponds are the norm)
Comments: Goldfish are an
unfortunate target of many beginners. Because of their huge space requirements,
they can not be kept in bowls and small tanks, and because of their waste
production, they need a large amount of filtration and frequent water changes.
If you think keeping a goldfish alive for over a year is lucky, you have some
serious research to do. Remember that these are living things, and they can
feel pain. For more info, see my Guide to the Goldfish
