COMPARISON BETWEEN RESTORED AND UNRESTORED PAINTINGS

These two photographs show clearly the effect of restoration or, from another point of view, the effects of 130 years of soot and ageing.

The difference in appearance is very close to what you would see if you stood in the nave of the church looking at the two adjacent paintings. The two photos were taken on the same day, at the same time and under identical lighting conditions.

The top photo is of Station 8 (unrestored) and has part of restored Station 9 in it which helps the comparison.

Unrestored Station 8

Restored Station 9

The above photographs were taken in February in not so good lighting conditions although the comparison is quite clear. The adjacent photo has Station 9 with its unrestored neighbour on the other side - this time on a bright day in July.
