DETAILS DURING CLEANING OF STATION NO 1
When viewing the photos of the painting in the hall, remember that the painting is on its side.

| Initial cleaning on Station No 1. Firstly the dust and soot is taken off. Then the varnish is removed. The piece of tissue paper is covering an area of flaking paint. | ![]() |
| This shows the servant pouring water over Pontius Pilate's hands. Notice the green tunic of the servant has patches which are darker - this is where the varnish hasn't been removed yet. The dark mark on the shoulder of the servant is a small (2-3 cm) tear in the canvas. | ![]() |

| This is the person standing to the left of Pontius Pilate. No cleaning of any kind has been done on the right. Moving to the left, you see an area that has had the surface dirt and soot removed but still with the varnish in place. Then, further left, the varnish has been removed. | ![]() |
| This is Station No 1 fully restored and back in place. The photo is taken in June 2001. The lighting conditions are very good. The picture of the unrestored Station at the top was taken on a dark day so the comparison between the restored and the unrestored picture is somewhat exaggerated. | ![]() |
