Gaelic football starts this Sunday
24 March 2008 - The Gaelic football season tips-off at Willawong this Sunday when the western suburbs’ Shamrocks ladies team plays Sarsfields in the opening round of the Brisbane Shield. Shamrocks mens have a bye, with their season starting in earnest the following weekend April 6 when both the Shamrocks mens and ladies teams play John Mitchels. The Brisbane Shield competition begins on Sunday 30 March, and runs for 5 weeks, followed by the Queensland League. The Brisbane Shield finals are scheduled to be under lights on Friday night June 13. The Brisbane western suburbs club is looking for new mens and ladies players with training on Wednesday nights, matches on Sunday afternoons. 11 February 2008 - New players are now being recruited after the western suburbs’ Shamrocks Gaelic Football Club elected a new committee for 2008 at its annual general meeting recently. James Marshall returns as president after filling the role in 2005. Krystal Hansen is treasurer, Luke Devitt and Shane Gibney secretaries, with Paul Rice, Cameron Carney, John Collins, Meranda Toner, and Sue Monsen, as committee members. 10 January 2008 - The Shamrocks Gaelic Football Club Inc. is holding its Annual General Meeting this Saturday night at the Indooroopilly Pig ‘n’ Whistle. It starts at 7:00pm Saturday 12th January and doubles as a start of year celebration, so all members and supporters should attend. Kan was the best goal keeper in the competition, but at half time of the semi final against Easts he moved to midfield and immediately scored 1-1 to get his team back in the game. Shamrocks eventually lost but it was a successful foray into the younger age group for the club that has represented the western suburbs at various levels since 1983. Andrew Pullar also scored a goal, while Gareth Maclean, Joe Moloney, and Aaron Gibson provided points.
Outstanding forwards included Gareth Maclean, Joe Moloney, Oliver Schimke, Tim Edwards, Sam Shooter, Andrew Pullar, and Harold Peacock jnr who finished as leading scorer. Midfielders were Ben Dixon and Nick Bertoli-Simmonds. Strong defence was provided by Malcolm Gill, Callum Monks, Ryan Butt, Aidan Waldron, John Wang, Kurtis Tupangaia, Jesse Dixon, and Aaron Gibson.
Paul Daly Cup remembers late champion
The inaugural presentation of the Paul Daly Cup for the senior mens best and fairest player was made to giant Dublin midfielder Stephen Halpin, after an outstanding season including finishing as the team’s third leading scorer. The cup is named after Irishman Paul Daly who in 2005 broke the club’s oldest individual record when he became the first player to kick over 50 points in a season, and led the team in scoring as it won the Queensland League title for the first time in seven years. The 27-year-old died in an accident in his hometown in Westmeath, Ireland, in December last year, sending his Shamrocks clubs in both Mullingar and Brisbane into shock. Also at the at the Indooroopilly Pig ‘n’ Whistle’s Cambridge Room on the weekend, the Shamrocks ladies best and fairest award went to the ladies leading scorer Alycia Clayton. The Stuart Clement Trophy for the under 18 mens best and fairest player was won by Bodie Wilmot, who became only the third player in the award’s 24-year history to win the shield for a second time. Other winners were senior mens most consistent Luke Devitt, most improved John Collins who equals the record for most career awards with four, and best first year player Matt Waters. Ladies winners were most consistent Sue Monsen, most improved Emma Beckman, best first year player Lyndal Daley. 24th Annual Awards winners:

Tom Kan came out of goals for cracking scores as the Shamrocks club bowed out of its inaugural under 15 Gaelic football competition in style at Willawong recently.
Four weeks earlier, Shamrocks handed two-time premiers Souths its only loss in its two junior seasons.
10 September 2007 - A past champion killed in a roadside accident last year has been honoured by the Shamrocks Gaelic football club at its annual awards at Indooroopilly over the weekend.
