SHALLA CHATS with author Andrea Wilder

“ Choosing to E-publish”

by Shalla De Guzman

First off, who’s Andrea?

Andrea Wilder writes historical and contemporary romance, with an occasional diversion into the paranormal. Her latest book, Strong Enough, published by Treble Heart Books comes out this summer.

Shalla: So tell us about E-publishing. First of all, what made you decide to go that route?

Andrea: I love writing novellas, but the market for them is very limited unless you’re an established author who’s asked to contribute to an anthology.

Small presses are much more open to producing novellas from new authors.

Shalla: Is your publisher, Treble Heart Books, RWA recognized yet? If not, are they working on it?

Andrea: Treble Heart is a true independent press with no links to RWA. However, many of their authors, including myself, are members of RWA.

Shalla: If an e-book sells well, do they get printed on hard copy? If yes, where are they being marketed and sold?

Andrea: Treble Heart offers a print option in their standard contract, even for novellas. This is very unusual for a small press and is one of the reasons I chose to publish with them.

The books are marketed and sold through their website (www.trebleheartbooks.com).

Shalla: I read the format for e-book files differ from publisher to publisher. Which format are your books?

Andrea: My books are offered in Acrobat’s PDF format and also as trade paperbacks.

Shalla: Which e-publishers would you recommend?

Andrea: I only have experience with Treble Heart, but I would definitely recommend them.

Anyone looking at independent presses should investigate each one thoroughly and make sure they’re comfortable with the idea before submitting.

These are the major things I considered:

* Length of time in business
*Are books in the catalogue by several different authors or just the owner of the press?
*Editorial staff. Often, there will be bios on each one so you can get an idea of their background and experience.
*Print option for any book or only for top sellers?
*Length of time publisher has rights to your book
*Royalty rate and payment schedule
*Post questions to writers’ loops for good and bad feedback on potential publisher

Shalla: Are you responsible for promoting your book?

Andrea: Every author is responsible for promoting their books, no matter who publishes them.

Although Treble Heart does what they can, they’re responsible for many authors besides me, so I do a lot of my own promotion. I signed up with Books We Love (www.bookswelove.net), a very reasonably priced author promotion service.

They’ve brought me dozens of new contacts I wouldn’t have gotten locally. And whenever I can, I contribute to projects like these to get my name out there. I’m not only selling this book but also creating a reader base for the next one.

Shalla: How are you promoting your book?

Andrea: Besides Books We Love, I have my own website, which comprises the bulk of my promotional effort.

I design and maintain it, so I can update it as often as I want. I also do mailings and e-mailings and have reviews posted on several online review sites. Of course, there’s nothing like good old-fashioned word of mouth. I’ve sold many books that way.

Shalla: So how long is your book staying on inventory? And where do we find it? Where do we get it?

Andrea: Unbroken will be available for 2 years in both electronic format and trade paperback. You can purchase it directly from Treble Heart Books (www.trebleheartbooks.com).
