What Is Viral Marketing?

The term Viral Marketing has caught on and it doesn't look like it is going away (much like a real virus!).  What does it mean?

Very simply, Viral Marketing is when one person tells another about your business, product, service, or idea.  Just like a virus, word of your good deal spreads from one person to another Yup, it's basically good old Word-of-Mouth.

On the Internet you get Viral Marketing when:
 * A subscriber to your newsletter forwards it to a friend.
 * Your website visitor uses a refer-it form to tell several     friends to take a look at your site.
 * You promise customers they will get something good if    they send several associates to your site.

For all of human history the great drawback to Word-of-Mouth was no two people told the story the same way.  By the time neighbor four heard about neighbor one's good shopping experience, the story had them buying a lawnmower rather than a patio chair.

The beauty of Viral Marketing on the Internet is it's accurate.  When someone forwards your email sales letter to a friend, they get the complete message just as it came from your keyboard.
