Nichiren Buddhism is based upon the Lotus Sutra, the teachings of the first historically recognized Buddha, (known as Siddhartha Gautama or Shakyamuni Buddha). The Lotus Sutra, unlike provisional Buddhist teachings, declares that all living beings have the potential to attain enlightenment (or Buddhahood). Nichiren Buddhism is a humanistic philosophy which recognizes the value of the individual and encourages us towards peace and happiness in this lifetime.
