In June 1999, Jeffrey Bornstein, a twenty-nine-year-old Montreal-born, physician whose ancestors came from Belchatow, Lodz and Warsaw, Poland and Rovno, Ukraine, learned he has chronic myelogenous leukemia, a form of leukemia that can only be cured by a bone marrow transplant.

Although Jeffrey's life can be extended by other therapies, only a bone marrow transplant can cure him. Because the best donor match normally comes from a close family member and neither of Jeffrey's two sisters provide a suitable match, the search has widened to include both relatives and other possible donors worldwide. Searches of the Bone Marrow Registries in Canada and internationally are already in progress. Many more donors are needed, however, if Jeffrey is to have a realistic chance of finding a suitable match. Therefore, EVERYONE IS URGED TO BECOME GENETICALLY TYPED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

While the search for Jeffrey's ancestors in Poland has been proceeding, other efforts continue in North America to develop a family tree of all his relatives who came here around the turn of the century. These include searches of death records, cemeteries and the Internet.

It needs to be emphasized that while anyone who shares a surname with any of Jeffrey's ancestors -- BORNSTEIN (BORNSZTAJN, BORENSZTAJN), BERNSTEIN, BRANDEIS (BRANDEJS), HUBERT (HIBERT, CHUBERT, CHIBERT), KALINSKA, KLINKE (or KLUG), KROL, KUMAN (or KOMEC), LAJBTRAUT, LIBERMAN, LICHTENSZTAJN,  and PROCHEWSKI (PEROCHEWSKI) from the Belchatow, Lodz and Piotrkow areas of Poland, and GAMPEL, KAYSA, SOSNA and WILK from the Warsaw, Poland, and Rovno, Ukraine, areas -- is more likely to be genetically closer to him, they are by no means the only ones who can be a match for him. The primary goal of the project is to register as many individuals as possible to give Jeffrey the best chance of finding a match. Jeffrey is a descendant of Max (Icek Mendel) BORNSTEIN, born 1865 in Belchatow, died 1937 in Paterson, New Jersey.

Jeffrey, who is currently completing his final year of training as a gastroenterologist (with special interest in liver transplantation) at Duke Unversity Hospital, says it best: "I am 29-years old. I have a beautiful wife and two wonderful children. My three-year-old daughter looks exactly like my wife, and everyone says my one-year-old is a little version of me. I have a promising career as a hepatologist. I also have leukemia. Without treatment I would have three years to live. Certain drugs can extend this to seven years, but no drug can cure me. My only hope for a cure is a bone marrow transplant. Every person might be the one to save my life. Every new donor gives me that much more of a chance to one day be my son's little league coach and to walk my daughter down the aisle.

"I urge you, on behalf of all of us in need of a bone marrow transplant to respond to this plea."

Anyone who would be willing to be genetically typed (which involves giving a small amount of blood) as a possible donor, should contact the Bone Marrow Registry in your country. For those wishing to pray for Jeffrey's recovery, his Hebrew name is "Yaakov David ben Esther Raizel". His father's Hebrew name is "Yitzchak Benjamin". The Bornsteins are Levi'im.
