Please note that while I am using the same page design
and graphics I created and currently use on my Marion County SCGenWeb site, this page
is on my personal web site and not a part of The USGenWeb Project.
A FEW NOTES ABOUT THE 1790 FEDERAL CENSUS FOR OLD MARION COUNTY:
- The 1790 census was taken starting on 2 August 1790
- The original copy of the 1790 population schedule, as handwritten on one enormous
sheet of paper, prepared by Charles Brown, and roughly alphabetized, still exists
and may be viewed as image files at the SCGenWeb Archives (see below).
- In 1790 Marion County was part of Georgetown District, and the population was
enumerated by the Anglican parish divisions. Old Marion County is spread over two parishes:
--Prince Frederick, which contained the geographic bulk of Dillon
and Marion Counties, together with
modern Williamsburg, the greater part of modern Florence, and the western portion of Georgetown
County, and
--Prince George (largely modern Horry Co.) which contained a portion
of the eastern section of Old Marion (modern Dillon and Marion Counties). If your roots are
in Dillon County, I highly recommend that you examine Prince George Parish
census data first.

NARA Microfilm # M637-11 (original, handwritten schedules for S.C.)
NARA Microfilm # T498-3 (printed schedules for S.C. published by the Bureau of the
Census in 1907-08)

The SCGenWeb Archives has two copies of the
1790 Federal Census for all of South Carolina.
One is the original, handwritten copy of the census,
the other is the familiar printed (book) version. Marion and Dillon County researchers
should scroll down to GEORGETOWN DISTRICT and examine the image files for Prince Frederick's
Parish and Prince George's Parish.
- 1790 Federal Census - Georgetown District - Transcriptions
I transcribed Prince Frederick's Parish from the original handwritten version,
and reorganized it to help you in your search. I haven't had time yet to complete
Prince George's Parish.
