Is man made carbon dioxide from fossil fuel burning a threat to the environment? Water vapor accounts for about 95-98% of the earth's greenhouse effect. There was some increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere in the last century, but this might be insignificant. Much of the hysteria appears to be from speculation from far left environmentalists. The effects of increased levels of carbon dioxide are debatable, but many of the catastrophists insist that the case is closed and insist on immediate changes world-wide. Global warming paranoia might have the potential to become one of the greatest wealth destroying forces in recent history. Conventional oil production is declining in many areas of the world. Use of proven alternatives such as heavy oil, oil sands, coal to liquids technology and even coal fired power plants are being impeded by the global warming hysteria. Some politicians who have been influenced by this hysteria are trying to implement cap and trade systems and other legislation in various countries throughout the world which will result in increased energy costs which will be passed along to the already overburdened consumer of energy. Alternatives to fossil fuels include such things as nuclear power, wind, solar, geothermal energy, hydroelectric, tidal and various other sources. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Nuclear energy is expensive and has its own opponents. Wind can only supply about 15 to 20% of US electricity needs. Geothermal, hydroelectric and tidal power are also limited. Some consider corn based ethanol a boondoggle, but the technology may improve over time. Most vehicles run off of liquid fuels (mostly from petroleum), some run off of natural gas. Affordable and reliable battery powered cars are proving difficult to produce, but work continues on this technology. Hybrids combine a gasoline or diesel engine with an electric regenerative braking system. We need a diverse supply of energy sources including fossil fuels to supply our needs well into the future.

Global Warming: The Origin and Nature of the Alleged Scientific Consensus by Richard S. Lindzen
------------------Lars Kamel believes that rising temperatures cause increased levels of CO2 in the atmosphere. Global warming alarmists believe the cause and effect relationship is the other way around, ie. increased levels of CO2 cause a rise in the earth's temperature due to a greenhouse effect. CO2 becomes less soluble in water as the water temperature rises and may be released from the oceans as the earth's temperature rises.
Here's a quote from Lars Kamel's page noworry.htm
quote:
One argument which the alarmists use to back their claims, is that data from boreholes in the Antarctic ice show that temperature and CO2 correlate very well. What they don't tell the public, however, is that correlation does not prove causation. And, in fact, the cause is precisely the opposite of what the alarmist would like you to believe. In the past couple of years, new and better analysis of the Antarctic ice data, giving a better time resolution, have shown that first temperature rises, and then carbon dioxide levels increase. It is the temperature increase which causes the increase in carbon dioxide and not the other way around. The extra CO2 could at most add a little extra warming to what is going on, but not even that is certain.

quote:"The common enemy of humanity is man. In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill. All these dangers are caused by human intervention, and it is only through changed attitudes and behavior that they can be overcome. The real enemy then, is humanity itself." - Club of Rome, premier environmental think-tank consultants to the United Nations
