Summer 2008
From the SaveMonroe Board of Directors
Welcome to the SaveMonroe website. SaveMonroe is a non-partisan group of citizens that formed out of concern for the rapid and sometimes uncontrolled growth our community has been undergoing. We have not been satisfied with our elected Town officials' response to the issues facing our town, and are greatly concerned with the lack of planning and foresight for the future. We welcome you to browse our site where we have compiled several years of news stories that pertain to Monroe and its neighboring communities. We also encourage you to join our mailing list and to invite your friends and neighbors to do the same.
EYE ON THE BOARD
What has our Town Board been doing lately? Spending taxpayers money on an extravagant trip to Manhattan! The Times Herald Record reported in May 2008 that Monroe's Town Board was the TOP SPENDER in a trip to a State Association of Towns Convention. Monroe spent $13,818 to send 18 people to Manhattan. It is with deep regret that SaveMonroe has learned the Town Board voted AGAINST TELEVISING PLANNING BOARD MEETINGS. Despite our pleas and petition, the following was announced in the December 8th 2006 Photo News:
.... In other business, the board voted against a controversial proposal to televise Planning Board meetings. Board members said the filming of the meetings would undermine the technical nature of the discussion and potentially confuse the public.
Councilman Harley Doles, the one contrary vote in support of videotaping the meetings, noted: “As government continues to offer more information seamlessly, the quality of dialogue and understanding between the public and government is certain to grow.”
Televised Planning Board Meetings have been requested by SaveMonroe and members of the community for years. These requests have fallen on deaf ears. Not everyone can attend the Planning Board meetings due to work schedules and family obligations. The public is effectively being shut out of this process, and what happens at the Planning Board affects all of us.
We will still leave our petition active, if you wish to sign
The SaveMonroe Petition
requesting that the Planning Board TELEVISE their meetings.
