Ryan was born in New Castle, Delaware, on September 10th, 1974. He comes from a large family and is the only boy amongst three sisters. His first real break in acting came with his role on the daytime soap,
One Life to Live. He landed the role of Billy Douglas, the first openly gay character on a daytime show. He only stayed on the show for a year but the performance allowed him to move on to bigger and better things.
First, however, he had to settle for a string of TV movies and for a while it looked like Ryan would fade into obscurity like many a young star before him. The fact that he is very reclusive and never made the rounds of teen publicity certainly didn't help his career.
Then things really started happening. First came White Squall, a popular film about a crew of young students who attend a unique school on board a ship and the troubles they encounter. The film boasted a large ensemble cast of some of Hollywood's hottest young studs. Even amongst all that competition, Ryan managed to stand out with a tremendous performance as Gil Martin. Next came
I Know What You Did Last Summer, a sleeper hit of 1997. The film helped to make Ryan Phillippe a recognizable name for many young fans.
His fame has been growing ever since, and Hollywood is definitely taking notice. Every studio wants to have the next Leo in their film and several are betting Ryan will be it.
Ryan and longtime girlfriend (and Cruel Intentions co-star) Reese Witherspoon just had their first
child together. The two got married on June 5th, 1999.
