Introduction

"Greed is good" exclaimed Gordon Gekko at the annual shareholders meeting in 80's classic film Wall Street. The concept of get rich by any means necessary was a prevalent practice during the Reagan era. Today, we have moved slightly away from that relentless idea but people still want a return on their investment. When most people think about making money they think of the stock market. How do people make money in the stock market? And, is the old adage "you need money to make money" true in the stock market? Can "the common man" make money in the market or do we need professional advice and help?

There was an incident a few years ago that involved a radio-show-induced challenge between a local stock broker and a monkey over who could pick the best stocks. This began a month-long contest between the research-fueled stock broker and the chimp who'd merely point at stocks on the market page and his assistant would go buy them. They both started with a $1000 bank, but somewhere along the way the broker slipped on a banana peel, and the chimp finished in the black while the broker in the red (as was his face, I'm sure!). Not to mention the broker's embarrassment during frequent updates (live on the air) on his progress versus the hairy day trader's luck.

This web quest is designed to determine if there is any validity to the above-mentioned scenario and to answer the questions previously mentioned. During this project, you will be the researcher, not the chimpanzee.
