Welcome to the Rugby Velo web site. Rugby Velo is a cycling club based
in and around, you've guessed it, Rugby, England. The Club has been
cycling since 1953 but have been known to stop at a cafe now and
again. We currently have over 50 members, aged from 5 to
75.
The Rugby Velo Club is affiliated to
British Cycling, the
CTT and locally to the NCRA (Northants Cycle Racing Association).
What's On:
* Sunday Club Runs - 9.30am from the Paddox Pub. Fingers crossed for good weather.
Latest News:
* Club TT's - Phil Clark just sees off the attentions of Rich Bray on the Braunston 10 course. Whilst guest rider Scott Rose eclipsed all, see the results.
* Inter-Club TT - A valiant effort on behalf of the Club members saw the runner-up spot retained for another year, see the results.
* Welsh TT Champs - Club veteran champion Vince Jenkins finished 3rd in his age group at the Welsh Open TT Championships last weekend (11/5/08) when he recorded a time of 1:0:23 for the 25-miles. He would have recorded a sub hour time if it wasn't for the road sweeper and the resulting que of traffic slowing him. See the results.
* Unsung Hero - At the recent Annual Rugby Borough Sports Awards held at the Benn Hall, Pete Mooney was nominated for the Unsung Hero of the Year Award for his services to cycling. Pete missed out on the top prize but was awarded with a certificate as runner-up.
* Timekeepers wanted - With the new 2008 Club time trial season soon to be upon us the same old plee goes out for someone to hold the watch. Get your name down as a timekeeper for at least one event in the year. Average points for any Championship round you miss due to timekeeping duties will be added to your total at the end of the season.
* Club TT's - The 2008 Club time trial calendar is now available.
* National Trophy, Mallory - Wow was that a grim day at Mallory, didn’t stop raining all day adding to the misery was the raw wind that chilled you to the bone. Congratulations must go to Pete Mooney and his team who made sure everything ran smoothly in the horrible conditions. It was a shame the weather kept the spectators at bay because the racing was red-hot.
Phil Roach led the vets race before slipping back to finish 5th. Dave Garrett the only other Velo vet to brave the elements finished 24th.
You have to feel for Ben Roach, he was leading the junior race for the first 2 laps by up to 100m at one point before Scott Thwaites reeled him in. The two of them were locked together for a while until Ben punctured. After the bike change Ben was down to third, he fought back to second but Thwaites had too much of a gap for Ben to do anything about. Jeremy Hicks finished 22nd after another gritty performance.
Full report, results and photo’s of the carnage can be see on the BC website.
.
* Hillclimb - The competition are closing in but Gary Hipwell makes it a record 7th win, see the results. Thanks to Rich, Francis and Mark for officiating.
* Open 10 - Results from a hot and sticky afternoons testing.
Results
* Club Clothing - Stock and prices updated, get yourself some new kit.
Club Dinner & Prize Presentation
Friday 9th February: Edwards Restaurant, Crick, no local mink or water rat on the menu but some rather succulent duck instead. After the meal special guest Clare Gross presented the prizes and enlightened those present as to how she became a Fat Bird.
* Keir Maris Memorial RR - The weather was hot and so was the racing, see the results.
* Inter-Club TT - Rugby Velo make it 4 wins out of 5, see the results.
