HOME SECURITY
Burglary Prevention Advice.

Special thank you to Mr. Chris E. McGoey,CPP,CSP,CAM
additional information available at Mr. McGoey ' s site at
www.crimedoctor.com

Your home is your castle.. or is it?
Ron,What is our  worst threat to our home?
Chris, By far the worst threat to our home is burglary. The FBI reports a burglary occurs somewhere in the USA every 15.4 seconds. They defind this crime of burglary as a non-confrontational property crime that occurs when we are not home..
Ron, How can we prevent this crime in our homes?
Chris, It's important to first know who commits this crime and why. 1st., Many of these burglaries occur during the daytime when most people are away at work and school. The summmer months of July and August have the most break-ins with February having the fewest.Mostly young men under the age of 25 who are looking for items such as cash, vcr, cd and other small electronics,as well as guns, computers  are high on the list of  items wanted. How do they get in the house?   Chris,  Statistics tell us 70% of burglars use some amount of force, but they prefer an easy access through open doors or windows. They use  screwdrivers, channel-lock pliers, small pry bars and small hammers.  Ron,  How do they choose a house.?
Chris,  It may seem random but actually it's a selection process. They choose an unoccupied home with easy access, the greatest amount of cover, and the best escape routes.
Ron,  If they choose  so carefully HOW CAN I MAKE THEM CHOOSE ANOTHER, NOT MY HOUSE?

Chris, First step is to "harden the target" or make your home more difficult to enter.Remember the more difficult the more skill and tools needed. It''s not worth it. Secondly, most times they enter the front door,or back door. The garage door is easy too. Experienced burglars know that the garage and back door are usually the weakest points of entry. They also provide good cover. They Always look in side your car for your keys. and valuables..
Ron,  What should we do about securing the doors?
Chris,  Use a Grade 1 or Grade 2 high quality Lock on all exterior doors.Use Dead bolt Locks, SEE Mr. McGoey's WEB SITE.
The most common way to force entry through a door with a wooden jamb is to simply kick it open. The weakest point is always the lock strike plate.Builders use lightweight mouldings that are tacked on door frames thus simple to just kick in.
Ron, What should we do?     Chris,  Hardware stores  can provide you wih all the right items to make it  a safer  door. See Web Site for details.
Ron, What do you suggest we do about sliding doors?      Chris,  It's Important to know these doors use a latches NOT a lock. It's easy to open them from the outside.   Ron,  Why?    Chris,  Because the latch is inherently a defective latch mechanism.. Use a wooden dowel or stick in the track  and this will prevent or limit movement. There are othe devices  " metal fold down bars and blocking devices "charley bars" and track-blockers that can be screwed down. Hardware stores also have items to prevent  a door from being lifed up and out of its track. This is also important.
Ron is there anything else you would recommend?
Chris, YES, I would highly recommend that you place highly visible decals on all doors and on all windows. They should indicate  that you have an
alarm system,a dog or a block watch/operation identification. Burglars dislike alarm systems.
Thank you if you would like more information please visit Mr. McGoey's web site.
Thank you.
