Specialized Rescue Work with Large Breed Dogs

Akitas looking for a Home

Specializing in Rottweilers and Akitas, Rokita Dog Sanctuary has been rescuing large and giant breed dogs since 1993. With a primary focus of dealing with breeds that are more difficult to place, and therefore stand a greater chance of being killed in municipal pounds, Rokita Dog Sanctuary strives to retrain and rehabilitate these "throw-aways" -- dogs that have either outlived their usefulness or their novelty with impulsive owners who considered their dog a possession rather than a friend or
family member --
and get them into suitable household settings. There are many sad stories and these dogs have turned up for rescue under many different circumstances. Despite these setbacks and the traumas endured, they all still long for attention, affection and someone to please.

These dogs are not for everyone. But for those individuals who understand these breeds and are capable of providing them with the commitment, work and space required, these dogs can make wonderful companions. Attention, love and affection is what they all need and want and are the elements of a good home. However, more than plain old love is required for a proper bond with your rescue dog. It is crucial to the relationship to establish boundaries and a leadership role with the dog. As many of these dogs initially spent life chained up outside, neglected, ignored and often abused, it is imperative that the dog learn to trust and respect you and your decisions. These dogs' activities (or any dog's activities, for that matter), have to be monitored closely and they should not be allowed to free-roam, even if you own a farm property. Dogs that are allowed to roam usually end up getting hit by cars or shot by neighbouring farmers whose properties they trespassed.

Adopting a rescue dog can be the best decision you ever made. He/she will make a wonderful addition to the family and your "good deed" will give have granted him/her a chance at a decent life otherwise not possible. If thinking of adopting a large breed dog please take into consideration his/her special requirements. As stated earlier, these dogs are not for everyone, so please be prepared to handle them properly. It will make for a happier ending for both dog and owner.
