What is Rise of Nations?

Rise of Nations is a historical real-time strategy (RTS) game of epic scope for the PC. Players begin with a small state in ancient times and reach toward the present, building a nation of multiple cities through military conquest, diplomacy, trade, civic and scientific development. Rise of Nations (RoN) features many configuration options for both single-player and multiplayer online games. Using standard settings RoN can be played in well under an hour.

Rise of Nations: Thrones & Patriots is RoN's 2004 expansion, adding six new nations, more than 20 new units, four new historical campaigns, and governments! Rise of Nations: Gold Edition is now available and includes both the original RoN and the Thrones & Patriots expansion.

Who developed Rise of Nations?

Big Huge Games (BHG), headed by veteran game designer Brian Reynolds (Civilization II, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri), is the developer of Rise of Nations. Brian and several of his talented colleagues left Firaxis Games in early 2000, where they had been working on Civilization III, to found BHG and work on their "dream game." Microsoft Game Studios is RoN's publisher.

How is Rise of Nations different from other RTS games?

In lots of ways! Brian Reynolds and his design team have layered into this RTS game many of the features and deep gameplay classically associated with turn-based strategy (TBS) games.
