This query page served BEVERL(E)Y researchers since November, 1996, but because I had increasingly less time to maintain it properly, in the Spring of 2000 I switched to use of the BEVERLY Surname Forums.  These forums exist on the GenConnect system, hosted by Rootsweb.

The queries on this page, however, may still serve researchers well, so I continue to publish them here.

BEVERLY, BERRY, SUYDAM

Richard Beverly Berry - my 3d g/grandfather; know nothing of him except that he was not from around New Bern. I am convinced that Beverly was a family name since one of his nieces was also named Ruth Beverly Berry. There was another family of Beverlys in New Bern around 1937, who were kin to the Berry family (Fletcher G. Beverly). Richard Beverly Berry would have been born probably around the very, very early 1800s; married in 1831 to Sarah Anne Suydam of New Bern. Please...can anyone out there help?   Natalie, The Roscoe you inquire about may be the son of John Edward BEVERLY & Zelphia STANLEY, of Honey Camp, Dickenson Co., VA. Although my records do show that they had a son Roscoe, b. 12 Dec. 1913, and a daughter Roxie, b. 9 June 1916, along with six other children, there is no mention of a son John. (Naturally, this doesn't mean that there wasn't one.) This family is covered in Vol. II, No. 1 (Jan.-Mar. 1999) of the Beverly Family Newsletter, the cover of which is graced by a photo of Roscoe's grandfather, James Harmon BEVERLY. --Ed.

BEVERLY, BURCH, ROBERTS, WOOD, TAYLOR, WILLIAMS

I am the GGranddaughter of Leonard Wamsley BEVERLY b: 1886 VA. Leonard m/1908 to Rose Lea BURCH b: 1884. Rose is the daughter of Will BURCH b: 1853 and Jennie ROBERTS b: 1846. Leonard is the son of Richard BEVERLY b. 1843 who m/1881 to Aurora WOOD b: 1884 (tho it appears that they had been together as a family since 1865 - as the 1900 Amherst Co. Census states that they had been married 35 yrs.)

Aurora WOOD's marriage license lists Cabell b: 1796 & Mary (Elizabeth Phillips) WOOD b: 1790 as her parents. But since these two would have been in their late 50's at the time of her birth, who were her “real parents”? Richard BEVERLY is the son of Frederick J. (also appearing as James F.) BEVERLY b: 1805 who m/1829 to Sarah A. TAYLOR b: 1810.  Sarah's father was said to be “RichesonTAYLOR. Richeson is found first in the 1850 Amherst Co. census report with an “Isabella” age 58, and 4 children - and then in the 1860 in his 70's living in the home of an Alfred W. & Eliza J. WILLIAMS. Was the “Isabella” in the 1850 census Sarah's mother?  In the same 1860 Amherst census there is an “IsabellaWILLIAMS living in Sarah & and Frederick's home who is age 70. Anyone know what the connection is here? These people were of partly Native American descent, and lived in Amherst and surrounding counties of VA.   Mr. Pedersen, I do have a Minnie Alice BEVERLY who m. Willam BURNETT. Minnie's parents were Oliver BEVERLY and Sarah Canzada REEDY. Oliver was the son of James Harmon BEVERLY and Susanna POWERS. Sarah was the daughter of Hezekiah REEDY and Lovada Derona McFALL. This Dickenson County, Virginia branch of the BEVERLYs is mostly, if not all, the progeny of Elijah BEVERLY, Jr. and Nancy HAMILTON, who were married ca. 1833. The Oliver and Sarah BEVERLY family is one such. --Ed.

I have traced & verified my family back to Robert BEVERLEY. I am from the Elijah Sr. branch. My interest is in tracing the original Beverley Coat Of Arms (the one with the Rose and red/white quarter panels) as described and noted in “Burke's General Armory”. I know that Robert changed it - but I am interested in the original. Who was it granted to - where was it granted (Yorkshire?) - and when - and under what circumstances?
