  • Col. Peter BEVERLEY (1668-1728), of Gloucester Co., VA, son of Maj. Robert BEVERLEY, was married ca. 1688 to Elizabeth PEYTON. They had at least three daughters, Anne, Elizabeth, and Susanna. If you can trace your lineage back to Col. Peter & wife Elizabeth (PEYTON) BEVERLEY, then, according to at least one source, you can trace from Elizabeth back another 19 generations to one of the signers of the Magna Carta!

I am a descendant of Elijah BEVERLY, Sr., who was born May 15, 1762 in Orange County, North Carolina, the same county in which, on May 3, 1787, he was married to Mary (Polly) FREEMAN.
For the past fifteen or so years I have been collecting information on the family of Elijah and Polly, and have endeavored to solve the mystery of just where both of their families came from.  Polly FREEMAN's family almost certainly came to North Carolina from southeast Pennsylvania.  (Thanks to Patricia Straube for sharing her research on this question.)
Elijah, Sr. was orphaned at the age of three.  His father's name was John.  Various accounts state that Elijah's mother's name was Margaret, but if there is any basis for this, I have certainly never seen it.
