This game had huge playoff implications for both teams and it showed early on. After a tight first period, where both teams managed a combined 13 shots on net, the game was scoreless going into the intermission. Early in the second Queens opened up a 1-0 lead just 1:44 into the frame and that seemed to wake RMC up. The Paladins started to apply pressure and finally knotted the score at 1-1 with a power play goal by Greg McDonald (Ottawa,ON/South Ottawa Jr B) at 5:22. Paul Bradley (Calgary,AB/Canmore Eagles) further increased his team leading point total with an assist along with Ryan Thebeault (Sydney,NS/Riverview HS). The Paladin then jumped into the lead and sent the crowd into a frenzy when Josh Fudge scored short handed at 10:51 to give the Paladins the lead going into the third. In the third, Queens took advantage of an early power play and evened the score at 2-2 at the 3:44 mark. Needing a win to move into second in the division, RMC poured on the pressure out shooting Queens 19-5 in the final frame, but they could not solve Queens goalie Ryan Gibb. Gibb shut the Paladins out in the last frame and forced the game into overtime where both teams played a cautious OT and settled for the tie. The Paladins out shot Queens 42-21 on the night with Blair Robertson (Outlook,SK/Quesnell Millionaires) between the pipes for RMC. RMC was 1 for 11 on the power play while the killed 7 of 8 penalties with one short handed goal. With the tie, Queens remains two points up on RMC in second in the OUA Mid East Division. Queens is now 4-9-5-1 for 14 points while RMC is 5-12-2 for 12 points. In true Carr-Harris Cup tradition both schools decided that a tie would not settle to determine the Carr-Harris Cup. So to determine the winner of the cup the game went into a shoot out where RMC won to take home the Cup. This was the second time and first since 1997 that the game went into a shoot out to determine the cup winer. In the Carr-Harris Cup series Queens retains the lead with a 12-7-2 record since the game was established in 1986. |
