York 2 RMC 1    stats

The Paladins ended the first week of the season with a tough 2-1 loss against the York Lions on Saturday afternoon.  After a tough overtime game last night RMC came out sluggish against the Lions and it paid as they were out shot 13-7 in the opening frame.  Despite being outplayed they came out the period only down 1-0 after a York goal at the 15:00 mark.
The Paladins came out much stronger in the second period thanks to a 5 minute power play to start the period as they directed 13 shots at York goalie Kevin Druce. Druce put up a solid wall, as the Paladins could not take advantage to draw even.  The only  puck to get past Druce was when
Brent Maurice (Aylmer, PQ/Shawville Pontiacs) drilled a shot at 13:47 to cut the lead in half 38 seconds after York had built up a 2-0 lead.
In a back and forth final 20 minutes neither team could score despite several opportunites including the last minute when RMC pulled
Blair Robertson (Outlook, Sk/Quesnel Millionaires) for an extra attacker.
Robertson was solid stopping 33 of 35 shots while York netmider Druce stopped 31 of 32 pucks directed his way. The Paladins penalty kill continues to be a huge success as they killed 12 of 12 chances on the afternoon, including minute long two man disadvantage in the second, while power play struggled a little bit going 0 for 11.  The power play failed to convert 2 5-minute power play chances and a two and a half minute 2 man advantage.

Luke Pierce (Merrit, BC/Vernon Vipers) and Dion Lahoda (Kamloops, BC/Merritt Centennials) led the Paladins opening week with a goal and 2 assists each while Roman Srutek (Kanata, On/Kanata Stallions) netted tow assists.  Robertson continued to play well as he stopped 104 of 108 shots over three games.

In an unusual OUA schedule, RMC-Queens raced off against each other in a weekday season opener and they provided an exciting preview to the 2005-06 OUA season and division rivalry.  Both schools normally face each other post Christmas, but this year the two teams opened the season in the cross-town tilt.  Not only was this the season opener for both clubs, this game marked the introduction of Queen’s bench boss Kirk Muller to the OUA.  Muller was trying for his first win as head coach well Kelly Nobes was hoping to make a statement with RMC’s home opener. In this first of four meetings Nobes and the Paladins came out on top.   The 600 fans crammed in to Constantine Arena were not disappointed with this hyped match up.
The game was a wide open affair with lots of scoring opportunities and wide open play resembling the new look NHL style of obstruction free flow.  RMC came out strong in the opening period taking the play to Queen’s right away and were rewarded with a goal just 2:41 into the game.  Sophmore
Dion Lahoda (Kamloops,BC/Merrit Centennials) notched the goal with assists from Roman Srutek (Kanata, On/Kanata Stallions) and Luke Pierce (Merrit, BC/Vernon Vipers). The first ended with RMC taking a 1-0 lead into the dressing room.
In the first intermission Muller must have used some of his old coaches pep talks as the Golden Gaels took it to the Paladins in the second out playing and out shooting RMC.  The Paladins were out shot 18-8 but veteran
Blair Robertson (Outlook, SK/Quesnel Millionaires) made several outstanding saves to preserve the 1-0 lead into the third period.
RMC came out stronger in the third and held a 1-0 lead until 15:01 when the Golden Gaels Clinton McCullogh netted the tying goal unassisted.  The game looked like it was headed to overtime until Luke Pierce netted the game winner with just 30 seconds remaining in the game.
On the evening RMC was out shot 38-34 and went 0-5 on the power play including a one and a half minute 2 man advantage in the third.  Queen’s also went 0-5 on the power play.
The two teams now head on the road to face Brock and York on the weekend and will not face each other until after Christmas when 3 key games will likely determine playoff positions.
