AN
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH
MISS GUYANA WORLD 2003
Alexis Glasgow
RPP:
Tell us about your family, yourself. What is your ethnical background? Including
hobbies, hopes, aspirations
GW: I
was born at the New Amsterdam, (Berbice) hospital to my
biological parents Regina Farria and father Colin Glasgow. The
first born for my mother, other siblings followed with my
stepfather Leon Farria. These are Alisha (1983), Ryan (1986),
Deylon (1989) and Amanda(1991). Together with my Stepfather we
formed a family that shared many experiences together. Being the
eldest I naturally accepted many responsibilities, not knowing
how important a role this would play in my later life.
School
Life: My
first school attended was Viola Nursery at the age of 3. I
remember even at this early age how much I enjoyed interacting
with other children and performing as a pop star as a way of
entertaining ourselves. At the age of six (6) I moved on to
Primary School where my sense of responsibility of being the
eldest sibling no doubt helped me in being a school Prefect at
the age of nine (9), setting an example to my peers and others
older than myself. In 1995 I went to Canje Secondary School,
where I studied and passed Maths, English, Social Studies,
Integrated Science and Principals of Business, graduating in
2000.
Since
I believe education is a substantial part of becoming a complete
human being, I continued my studies after leaving the formal
education system and have since done and passed courses in: -
“Introduction to Computers” and
Microsoft software courses. I intend to complete a
Diploma in Marketing and learn Spanish in the very near future
so that I can go on and be the best possible person I can be.
Working
life: My
first job came as soon as I graduated from school at the age of
17. This was in a Doctors office as a nurse’s aid. To further
my experience in the working arena, I then took an
administrative job with a drinks company (Banks DIH) as Book
Keeper/Data Processor. However, I wanted to gain more life
experience, so I moved from the quiet country town of New
Amsterdam to the faster city experience of Georgetown, where I
took a job as a Sale Assistant in a pharmacy to sustain me. This
move accelerated my recent achievements, as it was here that I
was offered a chance to be a Flight Attendant, which in turn led
to me being asked to enter the local leg of the Miss World
pageant. Currently I am a Flight Attendant with an international
carrier.
Most
memorable experience: Winning
the local leg of the Miss World contest was the most memorable
experience in my life to date: starting out on a journey and
believing in myself.
Hobbies:
Singing
is my passion and definitely an area in which given the
opportunity I would like to pursue in the future. For the time
being though I will just have to be content in displaying my
singing talents in the local karaoke bar.
Favourite
Personality/Role Model: Whitney
Houston epitomizes the shining all round acting and singing star
I will endeavor to become. Tall and elegant with a voice that is
strong and conquering. She’s a good start, although I realize
that no one is perfect.
Future
Ambitions: In
the immediate future I intend to further my studies in all areas
of life but especially in learning a new language and in
marketing/communications. Being true to myself I will continue
to take every opportunity in pursuing my dream of working in the
entertainment arena as an actress or singer.
RPP: What is your favorite food? Describe it to the world.
GW:
I
love to eat curry chicken and roti, an Indian dish, which probably
sums up the eclectic mix of cultures that I have been brought up
in, as well as my own ethnic background that includes four
different races.

RPP:
If you had the chance to live in another country for one year or
more than it, learning about that country's culture and people,
which country would you pick and why?
GW:
Australia.
Because it is a country of immigrants from all over the world.
RPP:
What is the most interesting/funniest that
has ever happened to you? And your most embarrassing moment?
GW:
The funniest
moment in my life was during the pageant all the delegate went on a
trip to Berbice and we had a lot of nice things to eat and the
next day some of us had diahorrea and the beauty about it is that
we had to share rooms so you could imagine a bunch of beautiful
women lining up to go to the toilet . (a sight to see)
The
most embarrassing moment: I was
chosen to represent my school at an inter high fashion show. I
was so confident so I started all enthusiastic and at
the front of the stage in front of all those people my shoe heel
broke... I was so ashamed I just smiled, picked up my
shoe and waved.

RPP:
How were you chosen to represent your country at the most
prestigious, Miss World pageant?
GW:
Through
a local pageant which I won. I entered because I believed that no
matter what the outcome would be, it would add to my life
experience.
RPP: Tell us something about your country that we
don't know.
GW:
It
is home to six different races and has the largest single drop
Waterfall in the world.
RPP: Is it really very difficult to be a
beautiful person?
GW:
No,
not really because we all have the ability to improve our inner
beauty everyday for free!!!
RPP: How do you see yourself in next 10
years?
GW:
Balanced,
with a loving family, a successful career, financially secure
and a continued inner spiritual peace.

RPP: How would you best define beauty?
GW:
The
way you feel through inner confidence and sharing love!
RPP: What according to you is the definition of
success?
GW:
Doing
it my way, whilst giving the opportunity to others to share
in my good fortune achieved through making my own luck. Inner
satisfaction through a balanced physical, material and spiritual
life.
RPP: Tell us something about yourself that's
unique and special.
GW:
I
am a very personable, with a smile on my face even when I sleep
RPP: What did you dream of becoming as an adult
when you were a little child?
GW:
I
dreamt of becoming a film star or a singer - an ambition I
still have.
RPP: Who do you think is the most successful
women in your country?
GW:
Baroness
Valarie Amos, although she no longer lives in Guyana. She was born in
Guyana before moving to the UK as a child. Now she is the leader
of the House of Lords in the UK's upper house in politics. A
fantastic achievement.
RPP: What is the most important thing you have
learned from your parents?
GW:
To
always believe in yourself and be positive no matter how dire the
circumstances may seem at the time.
RPP: Before concluding this interview, please
say few words for our visitors.
GW:
Whatever
is your thing, enjoy every moment of everyday with those you love
around you. Spread your joy to others and take time out everyday
to reflect on the day that just passed and look ahead to the
day that you are about to embark on. Love one another - we
all know that this is more important now than ever before. No
matter what your creed, race or religion.
Special thanks to Miss Guyana
World Org. & Alexis Glasgow.
