Retta
Christie (vocals/rhythm guitar/percussion), is the leader of the
successful Western Swing band Retta
and the Smart Fellas and the Retta Christie Trio. Her background
includes not only years of performance within the Western Swing genre, but also
a love and knowledge of classic jazz. Her engaging vocal style harkens back to
the era of such classic singers as Connee Boswell, Maxine Sullivan and Patsy
Cline.
Her repertoire encompasses songs composed by such well-known popular songwriters as:
“Retta's
art covers a wide sweep of territory from the openhearted frankness of the
swinging southwest to the pastel byways of classic American popular song.
One moment you think she's going to rope a steer right there in the room, but
then she gets a little break in her voice and somehow all your defenses are
down.”
Tony Baldwin, ABC Radio
“Retta
Christie has a singular knack for that curious, vastly entertaining form of
Americana that swings in the recesses between jazz and country.
Think Jimmie Rodgers, dustbowl prophets like Cowboy Bob Wills or Floyd
Tillman, or the flatland plains poetry of Hoagy Carmichael, and you’re in the
neighborhood. Fans of Irving Berlin
saloon songs will be swinging till the cows come home.”
Tim Duroche, Willamette Week
