| NEW video-DVD
release: Belgium: Video DVD release of René's work All Numbers Language for cello with interactive computer and video on the Contreclisse label , performed by cellist Nicolas Deletaille. See short excerpts of the dvd. All Numbers Language is a multimedia-work where the interplay between visual impressions, symbolic images, music, sound and human performance is very strong. The score builds on the shoulders of the literature for solo cello, especially the suites by J.S. Bach, and Benjamin Britten. Mogensen's music, while combining traditional instruments with electroacoustics and cutting-edge interactive computer technology, reaches a very immediate artistic expression, in a accessible concert style. |

WARNING: Flute at Large for flute with interactive electroacoustics and video, performed by Marianne Leth creates the illusions of new spaces for the flute to live within and to break out of. Real-time computer analysis of the flute playing is used to change the electroacoustic sound-rooms in which it exists during a performance. A feedback cycle is created between the performer, who is listening to speakers in the space, and the computer analysing the sound of the flute. This cyclical feedback system creates an immediate connection, or interface, between musician and machine. This interface allows great freedom for the performer and at the same time the electroacoustic sound can ”breathe” (in timbres, tempos, character, etc.) together with the performer. The computer sound becomes more musical, and therefore more relevant and even necessary for contemporary audiences. |

The Norway Times (in New York) writes about Mogensen's Concerts: René Mogensen "does more than just entertain the audience - he mesmerizes spectators with his interesting combination of electroacoustic sound, chamber music, and jazz... there is no doubt that his music and art will be a part of not only Danish contemporary music history, but also the entire worlds contemporary music history." |

Some program notes: René Mogensen: Dialogues - concert works for organ and interactive computer systems Dialogue is one of the most important activities, or tools, that mankind has to create understanding of him/herself and between people. Dialogue is communication, and exchange of ideas. Dialogue creates connections between people. These connections enable possibilities for a better life, and a better world for humanity. In my Dialogues for organ and computer, I investigate a sonic form of dialogue at several levels. There is the purely physical exchange of sound between the two poles in the grand church space: The organ at one end, and the computer-speakers at the other end. The organ existed as a musical instrument as far back as in the Greek antiquity, while the transistor-based computer and electric loudspeakers is from the twentieth century. In the Dialogues the interplay of organ and computer is an exchange between the old and the new. Music which in a traditional way is melodic and tonally-based is in dialogue with the wide, new, sound-palette of the digital computer. Old musical ideas enter into dialogue with new possibilities inherent in the modern technology. New ideas for an old instrument, the organ, play with and against traditional ideas programmed on the new computer. These music works, which exist as scores and computer-programs, and finally as sounding music, are manifestations of the composer's dialogue with himself, with his surroundings, and with the musical ideas and sound-materials that are used. This work is a gift to the performer, who in his practice and concert performances finds himself and his instrument in dialogue with a newer technology. There is a sonic palette which is foreign to the organ, but which is integrated and renewed, as the organ is renewed, through dialogues. The musician's gift to the audience is the sounding music, which seeks dialogue between the specific personal and the universally human. |

Current collaborations include work with bassist
Rui Salgado (P/BE) and another project with the virtuoso pianist Frank
Roberts (UK/DK), there
are some recent test-tracks on the myspace
jazz-page. René also writes new works for large jazz ensembles, and recently had performances with Klyver's Big Band and the DJM Big Band in Aarhus, Denmark. Preferring to perform on the soprano and tenor saxophones, René offers a warm and powerful sound, with high lyric quality in the modern jazz arena. According to the Norway Times in New York, his performance "...does more than just entertain the audience - he mesmerizes spectators..." He has written many jazz tunes, also works for bigbands, and his music "exhibits a real talent for writing." according to SOS Jazz, Ohio, USA. His music is "Honey for the ears" according to Ugeavisen for Varde, Denmark. His combo have included Tom Beyer (drums/perc.), Steve Brown (guitar), Pat Cosmo (guitar), George Reed (drums), Tony Moreno (drums), Ron Velosky (bass), Woody Peters (trumpet), David Ullman (guitar), Jeff Barone (guitar), and many others... |
