Mission: to create an accessible network of human and social services empowering low-income individuals to improve    their quality of life.
The LaStraw was incorporated on May 23, 2003 and received exempt status on January 9, 2004.  There are a number of resources in Greensboro, NC and if applied correctly those resources can break the poverty cycle.  People living in low income areas are trapped in a hyper-vigilant state of emergency - just trying to make it through the day.  Traditional Social and Human Service organizations focus on numerical results and are in no position to create long term solutions.  They spend all their time putting out "fires".  We focus on preventing fires by teaching "fire prevention" through self empowerment, resource development, and asset allocation.
Identify available reasources:
Most people know exactly what they need to make their life better, but have no idea how to make it a reality.  Because traditional information delivery systems were not constructed targeting low income communities or individuals, by the time it reaches a low income area it is dismissed as irrelevant, outdated or inaccurate.
Articulate the needs of the community:
The first person point of view is the most accurate way to gather information, however people living in low income communities are rarely sought out for their opinions.  Applying the trickle down effect traditional social serving organizations "anticipate" the needs of individuals living in low income areas.  Tradition has never worked in favor of individuals living in low income areas of Greensboro.
Creating a Platform:
The LaStraw provides the opportunity for individuals living in low income communities to engage in a meaningful discourse about the issues affecting their lives, as residents in the community we have a unique perspective on those issues and are in a position to steer these conversations into problem solving gear.  As we develop the network we expand the resource pool and increase the likelihood a resolution will be found.
